  3. Envirovet Summer Institute • W. Evet Baltic, has served about 330 students from 33 countries since inception in 1991. • Funded by foundations, corporations, private donors & course fees ($6,500/student). Expenditures = $10K/student/yr + equivalent in-kind provision of room/board, professional & technical staff. • Classes (25 maximum) are about half veterinary students & half veterinarians. • Eligibility: Minimum of 1 year in a DVM program, a Masters in relevant study, or equivalent experience. • Seven weeks of intensive classroom, laboratory, & field experiences in three locations. • Mid-June to early August. • 2 weeks: “Terrestrial” at White Oak Conservation Center in N. Florida and St. Catherine’s Island Conservation Center off the coast of Georgia. • 2 weeks: Aquatic at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution on Indian River Estuary: coast of Florida. • 3 weeks: South Africa & Swaziland, including the central & northeast regions, Kruger National Park, & the Indian Ocean coast. • See: http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/envirovet/

CVM Center for Zoonoses ResearchSummer Research Training Program • Has provided research experience to 27 students since inception in 2003. • New NIH grant will provide over $50,000/year for up to 5 years to attract highly qualified veterinary students to careers in biomedical research. • Up to 10 U.S.veterinary students/year (@$5K/ea). • Eligibility: Completed 1-2 years toward Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at a U.S. school. • Three months of summer research training in infectious diseases (not necessarily zoonoses). • Minimum of 1 week at UIUC. • Minimum of 11 additional weeks here or abroad. • Program participants paired with UIUC-CZR faculty researchers for laboratory & field work. • Past participants worked in Uganda & Argentina. • Merck-Merial pays for all travel & subsistence for veterinary students from all over the country to come together for a meeting in July. • See: http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/news/viewartcl.cfm?id=78

Merck-Merial Program • Pending funding (seems very likely). • Most work to be here on campus. • Possibility of some research abroad. • Mentors fund the research supplies & other costs, except….. • Merck-Merial funds stipends of students. • Merck-Merial also pays for all travel & subsistence for veterinary students from all over the country to come together for a meeting in July. • See CZR website (to be posted).

USDA – Pan-American Health Assoc. • New program under discussion. • Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) has been established in South America, but an effort to eradicate it is underway. • US Government may hire veterinary students & provide subsistence to vaccinate animals around infected areas. • Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Ned Hahn is working to develop this program.

Dodge FoundationFrontiers for Veterinary Medicine Program • Started 1996; about 210 students supported to date. • Twenty-three fellowships awarded in 2005. • Fellowships up to $7,000. • Veterinary students from US & Canada encouraged to step outside traditional bounds of veterinary education to explore & bring new solutions to pressing, animal-related issues. • Encourages topics that address companion animals, shelter medicine, conservation medicine & the link between open space, habitat, working land use/land management practices & animal welfare. • Other topics eligible, e.g.: lab animals, zoo animals, human-animal bond, animal-assisted therapies & humane and/or veterinary education. • Funded students are brought together for a symposium the Spring after their summer projects. • World-class speakers (Temple Grandin, Jane Goodall). • International work is ok if exceptionally compelling. • Proposals postmarked by December 16, 2005. • http://www.grdodge.org/frontiers_main.htm
