  2. Critical Tasks • Children’s initiative changes into something focused: a sense of industry • Master skills such as: • Reading/writing • Social interactions • Chores • Find acceptable hero images • Taking care and control themselves

  3. Cont’d • Developing a conscience • Get along well with peers and have a comparatively calm existence

  4. How the critical task is completed • Children need to be given the opportunity to accomplish successes • Recognized as successful individuals

  5. Consequences of Successful Completion • Will enter adolescence with assurance and confidence • Know they are important • Good work attitudes & habits in adulthood

  6. Consequences of Unsuccessful Completion • Difficulty developing relationships with peers • Will insist on being dependent children at home • Poor role models=stifle the individualization of child • Learn to depend on rules set by others • Won’t develop their own internal controls • Enter adolescence feeling inferior and incompetent

  7. Breakfast Club-Brian (Brain) • Parents do not encourage him to go out and be a teenager • Difficulty developing relationships with peers • Depends on rules set by others • Feels inferior and incompetent

  8. Techniques • Don’t blame parents or society for the way the child acts • Don’t generalize • Don’t lecture parents )explain how the activity can be taken (read by child) • Speak confident & with understanding • Explain to parents what is wrong & support what they are doing well

  9. Cont’d • Give recognition and esteem • Give child tasks which they can be successful at • Praise the accomplishments • Show how to turn failures into challenges • Discuss ways to develop positive, healthy relationships • Find programs and resources to the child can participate
