  1. You’re Putting What On Your Face?A practical guide to sensible and safe purchasing of body care products Prepared By J. P Durga, LLC P. O. Box 65346 Port Ludlow, WA 98365-0346 1-866-387-4222 www.jpdurga.com Manufacturers of totally chemical and petroleum free body care products infused with the highest quality of healing herbs and naturally extracted essential oils!

  2. Your Face, Arms, Hands, Back, Legs, Your Entire Body • What goes on the skin, goes in the body! • Do you know what is in your body care products? • Do you know how to find out what is in your body care products? • Read your labels and be able to identify the toxins! It’s always best to start at the bottom of the ingredients list. If the bad stuff is in there, the good stuff is cancelled out. • Organic is as important for the outside as for the inside • Toxins enter the body through the skin as well as the air, food and water.

  3. Skin vs. Ingestion • Skin is largest (non filtering) organ in the body – what goes on the skin enters the body in its complete form • Ingesting can be less harmful than applying to the skin; the liver or kidneys are able to filter some waste or toxins before they enter the blood • Anything applied to the skin is absorbed quickly and goes directly into the blood and the body • Some chemicals act as hormones by replacing our existing hormones and altering growth patterns • When tested they can show up in the blood serum but also in the saliva

  4. Where do we find these Chemicals? • Prescription Drugs – Tested & Approved • Over the Counter Drugs – Often misused • There is little or no FDA testing on multiple drug combinations – similar to herbs or herbal mixtures • Cosmetics – Not Regulated but effectively controlled by FDA due to restrictions on claims i.e. Retinol, Collagen, Rogaine • Body Care Products – No standards, no restrictions • Baby Care Products – We think they are safe because they are for babies, well? • Food Products – Organic, by whose standards? • Pet Products – Chemicals here too, on our best friends. • Household Cleaners – Their effects on the environment; chemicals poison the earth and us • Home Furnishings – No Place is Safe – woodwork, floors, walls, furniture, carpets, paint, utensils • And in our FOOD!!!

  5. Who do you trust? • FDA – Under pressure to approve, with time constraints and tight budgets, and they receive money for product testing from the pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers • Universities – Receive money and subsidies from the pharmaceutical and chemical companies to fund the research. How do they remain unbiased or ethical • Plastic Manufacturers – Keep dodging the truth by saying that there is no evidence • Pharmaceutical Companies – Sabotage the market to maintain control • Chemical Producers – Cheap, Fast, Easy but profitable. • Some doctors are paid by the pharmaceutical manufacturers to support and promote drug use • These same doctors are responsible for lowering or establishing levels used to determine disease states like hypertension, cholesterol, bone density, obesity, diabetes • FDA – will not allow claims for healing from any source or substance not approved by them. This disallows claims pertaining to the use of essential oils, herbs and other non traditional methods.

  6. What toxic ingredients are found in body care products • Parabens • Phthalates • Petroleum • Petrolatum & Mineral Oil • Glycols • Ureas • DEA, MEA & TEA • BHA, BHT • Sodium Laurel Sulfates • Carbomer's • Aluminums, Metals, Talc • Paraffin • Artificial & Synthetic Coloring • Artificial & Synthetic Fragrances

  7. Parabens, the “natural” preservative? I don’t think so! • Butyl-Ethyl-Methyl-Propyl – inhibit the growth of microbes and extend the shelf life of products • Act like Growth Hormones • Mimics Estrogen – identified as estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function • May alter hormone levels, increasing risks for certain types of cancer, impaired fertility, or alteration of the development of a fetus or young child • Used in Anti Aging Products • Found in Cancer Medications – external estrogens have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer • Known to cause various allergic reactions and skin irritations and rashes, especially with prolonged or repeated exposure • Shown up in breast tumors giving proof that chemicals seep into tissue after being applied to skin. They will accumulate in the body

  8. Phthalates Unstable and Dangerous – used as plastic softeners or solvents • Ubiquitous – Found in cosmetics, nail polish, perfumes, hair sprays, lotions, baby toys, food, paint, plastic wrap, medical tubing, cleaners, toys, shower curtains, medicines, toothbrushes, straws, car seats… • Regulated as toxic substances under environmental laws that limit their discharge into air, land and water. • European Parliament prohibits use of phthalates DEHP and DBP in cosmetics • Identified as a family of hormone-mimicking chemicals. • No limitations on the amount used in consumer products in US or Canada • Health effects include damage to the liver and kidneys, decreased sperm counts, testicular cancer, early puberty onset in girls, early breast development in girls and boys, and other reproductive disorders, as well as reduced fertility in males • Evidence of Phthalates has been found in every person ever tested for them • Phthalates were found 3000 ft. in ice of Antarctica, and jellyfish • Travels in the air, inhaled as fumes • Permeates the body easily – via vinyl medical devices, vinyl toys and when put in food or on the body • Causes birth defects to fetus, especially males • Harmful to infants, some infants born already exceeding body burden limits of exposure to chemicals • Do not show up as ingredients other than as letters like DBP (dibutyl-phthalate), DEP (diethyl phthalate)

  9. Petroleum Products in Medications and Body Care Products • Addictive – Our brain is able to create pain, chapped lips, skin irruptions, or other forms of skin irritations in order to satisfy its desire for petroleum. It masks this addiction by allowing our body to heal, thus giving us temporary relief. • Addictive – Our brain can increase our need for petroleum by intensifying various problems/conditions, increasing their frequency/occurrence, lengthening the reaction time, creating more serious conditions, making us more uncomfortable, thus requiring more applications • Addictive -Not curative, has no benefits, actually creates the condition it is intended to correct and perpetuates the problem • Can easily be ingested when applied to lips • Can easily be absorbed into the blood stream via the mucus membranes or skin

  10. Petrolatum & Mineral Oil • Petrolatum is a petrochemical that forms a barrier on the skin, makes lipsticks shine and creams smoother • Mineral Oil is a derivative of crude oil and petrolatum is mineral oil jelly • Mineral oil hinders normal skin respiration by keeping oxygen out • Mineral oil is drying and can promote acne and skin photosensitivity • Mineral oil slows down normal cell development, resulting in premature aging of the skin • Mineral oil and petrolatum actually create the very conditions they are intended to treat - addictive

  11. GlycolPropylene (PG), Polyethylene (PEG), Butylene (BG) & Thylene (EG) • Propylene Glycol is used in anti-freeze, brake fluid, de-icer, paints, floor wax, detergents and tobacco • All Glycols are petroleum derivatives and easily penetrate the skin • Inhibit skin cell growth and damage cell membranes • EPA warns factory workers to avoid skin contacts with Propylene Glycol to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities • Propylene Glycol is used to carry the “active” ingredients in transdermal patches • Know to cause eye, skin and gastro-intestinal irritations, allergic reactions and rashes, nausea, headache, vomiting and central nervous system depression • Actually causes dry skin but is commonly used as a humectant to help retain moisture • Other side effects include heart arrhythmia, stunted growth, decreased blood pressure and death • Butylene Glycol is now being used to replace Polyethylene Glycol but it is not on the FDA Generally Recognized A’s Safe List (GRAS) • Propylene Glycol alters skin structure, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deep into the skin, increasing the amounts of other chemicals that reach the bloodstream

  12. UREAImidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl • Second most commonly used preservatives next to parabens • Primary cause of skin irritations • They release formaldehyde, a toxic chemical, at very low temperatures (just over 10 degrees) • They are not effective at inhibiting the growth of fungus and thus need to be combined with other preservatives • May be contaminated with impurities linked to cancer or other significant health problems • Used in moisturizers, shampoos and conditioners, hair sprays, anti-aging treatment, shaving products, soaps, deodorants, fragrance, many things

  13. DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine) & TEA (Triethanolamine) • Alias include Cocamide DEA or MEA, DEA-Cetyl phosphate, DEA Oleth-3, phosphate, Myristamide DEA, Stearamide MEA, Lauramide DEA, Linoleamide MEA, Oleamide DEA, TEA-Lauryl Sulfate • Used as emulsifiers and foaming agents, popular in bubble bath, body wash, shampoo and soaps • Can cause eye and skin irritations, DEA is easily absorbed through the skin and accumulates in body organs, even the brain • Tests show damage to the liver, kidney, brain, spinal cord, bone marrow and skin • 1998 study by the National Toxicology Program showed a link between cancer in lab animals and DEA and certain DEA related ingredients when applied topically

  14. Butylated hydroxianisole (BHA) Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) • Both are used as preservatives in cosmetics, personal care products and in food • BHA is absorbed through the skin and stored in body tissues • BHT is harmful if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin • BHT causes eye and skin irritation • BHT is irritating to mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract.. • BHT Can cause severe destruction of tissue

  15. Sodium Laurel SulfatesSodium Laureth • Also known as SLS • Found in almost any kind of industrial cleaning agent such as shampoo, toothpaste, mouth rinses • Produces foamy, bubbly texture • Causes irritation on contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes • Can cause allergic reactions • Long term exposure may cause mutagenic effects • Rapidly absorbed and retained in the eyes, brain, heart and liver with possible harmful long-term effects • Pseudo-natural products use phrases such as “derived from coconut” but it is still Sodium Lauryl Sulfate • Harmful to hair and scalp • Alters skin structure, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deep into the skin, increasing the amounts of other chemicals that reach the blood stream

  16. Carbomers • Used in cosmetics as emulsifying, thickening, suspending and dispersing agents • Used in medical products such as transdermal patches • Described as a homopolymer of acrylic acid cross linked with an allyl ether penaeythritol, an allyl ether of sucrose or an allyl ether of propylene • Associated with skin and eye irritation, coughing, and possible skin rash

  17. Aluminum, Metals, Talc • Used to absorb moisture • Found in blush, powder eye shadow, powder, deodorant, and soap • Linked to breast cancer in men and women • Found in breast and lymph nodes during autopsies • When used in antiperspirants prevents the body from releasing toxins and blocks sweat glands • Toxins are poisons and do not belong in the body • The use of antiperspirants does not allow the body to detox and can also lead to other health risks including skin irritations, stomach problems, and chronic allergies • Can contribute or aid in cancer development because toxins are not removed from the body • Proven carcinogen, link between use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer • Talc is a mineral produced by mining and is made up of magnesium and silicon • Talc particles are similar to asbestos particles and can cause tumors in the lungs and ovaries

  18. Paraffin • This is a waxy crystalline substance that in the pure form is white, odorless and translucent. It is obtained from petroleum by distillation and is the purified by sweating or solvent refining. • It is not a true wax but sometimes blended with bees wax • Used in the manufacture of certain types of paper, leather dressings, marbling and in paraffin print production • Used in candles, food additives (chocolate) and cosmetics • Petroleum based and addictive

  19. Artificial/Synthetic Fragrances • These are compounds that volatilize or vaporize into the air • Added to products for scent or to mask the odor of other ingredients • VOC’s – Volatile Organic Chemicals emitted by fragrance products can contribute to poor indoor air quality • Associated with a variety of adverse health effected • Causes headaches, irritation to eyes, nose and throat, rashes, hyper pigmentation of the skin, nausea, vomiting, coughing, forgetfulness, loss of coordination, dizziness and other respiratory and/or neurotoxic symptoms. • Many fragrance ingredients are respiratory irritants and sensitizers and can trigger asthma attacks and aggravate sinus conditions • They are the #1 cause of allergic reactions to cosmetics –They have a second hand effect, in that they create allergies in nonusers. This is the reason we are being asked to create “Fragrance Free Environments” • Phthalates in fragrances are known to disrupt hormones and are linked in animal studies to reproductive impairments • Usually identified as fragrance on the label.

  20. Artificial/Synthetic Colors • Used to make products more attractive, but not functional • Usually listed as FD&C or D&C and accompanied with a color and number (FD&C Yellow No. 5) • Typically derived from petroleum or coal • Found in food, pet products, drugs, cosmetics and personal care products • Preferred over natural coloring because they do not fade during processing or storage • Lab tests prove that high doses of most synthetic dyes which are approved by the FDA are capable of causing various adverse reactions, including cancer.

  21. Artificial or Chemical Anything • Coloring • Fragrances • Fillers • Preservatives • Emulsifiers • Foaming Agents • All are chemicals that are harmful • All add nothing of value to the product and its functionality • All decrease the cost of manufacturing and reduce the quality of the product • WHAT DO YOU SAY TO YOUR CUSTOMERS THAT ASK FOR SAFE, CLEAN, PURE, NATURAL, CHEMICAL FREE PRODUCTS? HOW DO YOU RESPOND.? • DO YOU CURRENTLY OFFER SAFE, CLEAN, PURE, NATURAL, CHEMICAL FREE PRODUCTS. DO YOU HAVE A DESIGNATED ALLERGY FREE AREA? • THIS IS THE FUTURE OF BODY CARE PRODUCTS AND IT IS AVAILABLE TO YOU TODAY. • AVOIDING THE BULLET – ARE YOU PREPARED! • FINDINGS THAT CARCINIGENS OR CANCER CAUSING INGREDIENTS ARE IN COSMETICS AND BODYCARE PRODUCTS WHICH MAY BE ON YOUR SHELVES, WHAT WILL YOU DO? • IN FEBRUARY OF TH IS YEAR, THE FDA HAS ANNOUNCED THEY WILL BEGIN INVESTIGATING COSMETICS INGREDIENTS
