  3. What are the goals of tonight? • Learn about Data Notebooks • Gain an overview of our curriculum • Learn about ways parents can support students’ academic success this year.

  4. What instructional level is my student working on? • Each student receives instruction at his or her academic level. • Teachers will provide rigorous instruction that challenges students.

  6. Literacy • DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) • Guided Reading • Daily 5

  7. DRA • Benchmark assessment designed to systematically observe, record, and evaluate change in a student’s reading over time. • Provides information that determines a student’s independent reading level.

  8. Guided Reading • Lips the Fish – Say the first sound • Chunky Monkey – Look for chunks you know • Eagle Eye – Look at the picture • Stretchy Snake – S-t-r-e-t-c-h it out • Flippy Dolphin – Flip the vowel sound • Skippy Frog – Read to the end and come back • Tryin’ Lion – Try a word that makes sense • Books Sent Home!!!!

  9. Daily 5 • Read to Self • Work on Writing • Word Work • Listen to Reading • Read to Someone • Right now, we are focusing on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self.

  12. Science • Rubrics are used to assess student knowledge based on standards. • Human body Parts • 5 Senses • Inquiry Process • Properties of objects (color, texture, and size) • Insects • Plants

Expectations by December Literacy Standards: DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) level 2 Recognize CVC words Read 16 sight words of the required 35 Writing Standards: Able to write all uppercase, lowercase letters & numbers to 20 Math Standards: Recognize numbers 1 -20, and counting up to 50, counting on from a given number

Expectations by May Literacy Standards: DRA level 3 / 4 Recognize blends and digraphs throughout words Read all 35 sight words required for kindergarten Writing Standards: Write basic sentences using correct sentence structure (punctuation, uppercase / lowercase letters, spacing) Math Standards: Fluently add & subtract within five, place value (tens & ones), and counting to 100

  15. Ways to Support Students • Building Responsibility: • Help children understand and take responsibility for the consequences of their choices. (Negative & Positive) • Reading to Your Child: • Homework: Its important to spend time learning about what your child is learning in school and reinforce it through completing homework. • IXL & RAZ KIds • Positive Education: Demonstrate a positive attitude about education to your child.
