  1. VoIP Peering and Any to Any InterconnectionG. D. Redmill, Director, EMEA Market and Business DevelopmentPresented at VON EuropeMay 15, 2006

  2. The New Company Name Cantata Technology can•ta•ta (kën-të'të) n.Mus. A musical composition in which talents converge to create something truly unique. A work that is more innovative, integrated and engaging than the sum of its parts Attributes of Cantata: • International • Convergence • Ensemble • Integrated • Classic • Enabling • Innovating • Multimedia • Enduring

  3. Cantata’s Product Portfolio • Cantata IMG 1010 • An intelligent, integrated media and signaling gateway that enables delivery of SIP services into legacy SS7/PRI networks • SnowShore IP • Media Server • IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) media processing software resource • Cantata MSP 1010 • Cost-effective, multi-functional IP/TDM platform for voice, signaling Enabling Business and Network Transition to IP

  4. Network Evolution • Moving from a pure TDM world to pure IP • Migration in process, ongoing • Hybrid environments emerging as part of transition • TDM >>>> IP • IP >>>>>> TDM • IP >>>>>> IP • Evolving and expanding set of interconnection requirements • Operators must always consider interconnection relationships

  5. What is Interconnection? • Networks cannot exist as islands • Operators have to exchange traffic • Originating • Transit • Terminating • Typically, there are strict protocols regarding interconnection • Equipment approval (is it known?) • Conformity (which SS7 variant do I need?) • CAT (live acceptance testing) • Constantly evolving • Network evolution demands new approaches and creates new challenges

  6. ISDN SIP + RTP SS7 + TDM IMT SS7 + TDM IMT SIP + RTP Operators are Islands Operator B TDM Operator A TDM Operator D IP Operator C TDM Operator E IP

  7. New Challenges • IP migration demands IP / IP interconnection • VoIP Peering • Presents challenges for the boundaries • IP isn’t just about high-speed data access • Also needs real-time IP communications support • Voice traffic • SIP traffic (for voice and other applications – e.g. presence) • QoS and BW management (CoS) • Security • Need to consider IP/IP internetworking in the context of real-time, symmetrical communications services as well as asymmetrical

  8. VoIP Peering Issues • Address conversion (ENUM) • E.164 PSTN number mapping to URIs and IP addresses • Service Discovery and Location • What network is the user in (do lookup)? • Provide means to locate service address • Once a subscriber is located, what server element (e.g. proxy server) to contact to start session? • Signaling Mediation • May be SIP, H.323 or variants • NAT Traversal • Network Address Translation can affect signaling and media • Security • Carriers may want to hide network topology • Methods for privacy and authentication • Media translation (transcoding) • Convert among G.7xx,iLBC,AMR, EVRC • Also translation for fax and tones

  9. Bonjour, I talk G.711 and G.729… Hi, I talk G.723 and G.729… Hola, I only talk G.711… Media Translation (transcoding)

  10. IP Network 2G.729 IP Network 1G.723 Customer Case Study • Problem • Needed IP to IP transcoding to connect disparate networks • Solution • IMG 1010s deployed with H.323 in major International PoPs • Why the IMG and Cantata? • High density transcoding • Broad signaling capabilities • Proactive support provided during the deployment process LatinNode - One of the world's largest players in the international VoIP industry, transporting 3% of the global VoIP Long Distance (LD) traffic.

  11. LD Carriers(Outbound) Toll Free Service Provider (Inbound) IMG 1010 IP Network TDM Switches and VoIP Fabric • Media Gateways can IP enable a legacy TDM platform, no fork lift upgrades • Why VoIP? • Low cost shared bandwidth over an IP pipe • Establish carrier interconnects in days not months • Mixed mode networks such as this leverage existing technology while giving access to new technology • Reverse situation also true – TDM enabling IP applications or interconnect

  12. Summary • Networks are constantly evolving and providing new challenges • IP / IP interconnection increasingly likely • VoIP Peering with ENUM will revolutionize voice traffic • Leverage existing resources with bridge devices like media gateways • Cantata IMG integrated signaling and media gateway • Solves IP / IP & TDM / IP interconnection problems • NGN and Legacy signaling • SS7 / ISDN / SIP / H.323 • TDM and multiple IP Codecs
