  1. How to properly Cite(MLA) Mr. Mermelstein & Mr. McCarthy

  2. Resources to use • Books • A Manuel for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. • Internet • Easybib.com • Citationmachine.net • Purdue OWL • Owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/

  3. What needs to be cited? • Everything. • Quotes • Paraphrases • Facts that are not common knowledge • Speeches • Letters • Web Pages • Recordings • It is always better to “over” cite than to not cite enough. • More professional and academic

  4. How to Cite a book! • Needed components: Author, Title, city of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium • Example: Collins, Michael. The Path to Freedom. Dublin: Talbot Press, 1922. Print

  5. How would you cite this • Book: A Might Empire • Author: Marc Egnal • Location: Ithaca • Publisher: Cornell University Press • Date: 1988

  6. Citing a Webpage • Not Wikipedia. • Need: Author or Editor. Name of site. Name of Institution or organization. Date of creation. Medium of Publication. Date of Access. • Example: • Felluga, Dino. Guide to Literary and Critical Theory. Purdue U, 28 Nov. 2003. Web. 15 Feb 2013.

  7. Newspaper or Periodical • Author. “ Title of Article.” Title of Periodical. Day Month Year: Pages. Medium of Publication. • Example: • “Criminal Madness.” Irish Independent. 4th May 1916. • Better Example • Rittenhouse, Charles. “ Upper Dublin is the best school in Montgomery County.” Philadelphia Inquirer. 15 Feb 2013: 14. Print

  8. In text citations • George Bernard Shaw, one of the most prominent Irish writers, captured the situation best when he said: “it is absolutely impossible to slaughter a man in his position without making him a martyr and a hero, even though the day before the rising he may have been only a minor poet” (Macardle 187). • After the rebellion a young man who was a member of the Sinn Fein but had nothing to with the planning or fighting of the uprising was arrested while out walking (McHugh 320). • Advanced: If you are putting in text citation from the same author you can just put the page number in the citation.

  9. Work Cited Page • Work Cited should be centered at the top of a separate sheet of paper • Double Space all entries. • Entries should be listed alphabetically. • Authors should be listed last name first • If there is no author start with title.
