  8. Student Success: Our Collaboration • Degree Maps translation to Course Inventory • Significant effort • Likely to require central resources • What might we do in the meantime? INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  9. Student Success: Our Collaboration • Retention and Graduation increasingly begins with Admissions • Base enrollment planning on pre-college attributes (including engagement behaviors and expectations) . . . Prepare the campus prior to the students’ arrival • Go beyond “how many?” to “what do they need?” • Prepare for students having started their degree while in high school or at another college, how does this shift the types of courses we offer? • For example, with the common core, there is more demand for specific courses, but students may have already taken these courses. How can we predict the numbers of students who will need Comm-R110 and ENG-W131? INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  10. Student Success: Our Collaboration • Course Inventory Planning • New Approach to Classroom Utilization • Based on result of modeling, recommendations for time/day/space for additional classes to Deans • PROACTIVE ASSISTANCE!!! INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  11. Approach to Classroom Utilization • Currently: Classroom Space Divided • Departmentally-Controlled Space • Assigned by Academic Unit • General Inventory Space • Assigned by Registrar • “What if the Registrar Controlled the World?” INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  12. NEW Approach to Classroom Utilization • Guiding Principle • Academic Units should experience “no harm” if scheduling all classroom space became responsibility of Registrar • Specialty classes untouched • Current department-scheduled classes into home building based on 67% fill • “Priority” assignment into home building based on 67% fill INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  13. NEW Approach to Classroom Utilization • Premise • If Registrar controlled all classrooms, guiding principles upheld along with further classroom utilization efficiencies • Pilot with Engineering and Technology INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  14. NEW Approach to Classroom Utilization • Engineering and Technology Test Pilot • Specialty classes remained in their assigned rooms (Eng labs, etc.) • 62 more E&T classes scheduled into ET building • All with at least 67% fill ratio • Based on addition of 9 DC classrooms to Registrar inventory INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  15. NEW Approach to Classroom Utilization • Visit to E&T DC Rooms Three: specialized to Interior Design & had to remain open based on accreditation visit Two: specialized lab equipment; thermodynamics lab and materials lab Four: available to be turned over to Registrar INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS

  16. NEW Approach to Classroom Utilization • Same simulation for real for Spring 2015 Classes using the FOUR available new rooms in E&T • Plan to roll out to more units • Not magic bullet ….not a significant number of DC rooms in the inventory • But still better utilization of space and happier Deans, Chairs, Faculty…students! INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS
