  3. The Importance of Computers • People depend on computers to handle all kinds of tasks. • Paying bills online • Buying gas • Withdrawing money from the bank • Businesses of all sizes use computers to collect data and keep track of records.

  4. Computers for Business • A personal computer (PC) is a small computer that is intended to be used by one person. • A desktop computer is a personal computer that is small enough to fit in an individual work space. • Top PC makers • Dell • Hewlett-Packard • Apple is also a leading computer maker; however, its MacIntosh systems are considered “Macs” rather than PCs.

  5. Computers for Business • In most companies, computers are linked through either a central mainframe computer or a network. • A mainframe is a fast powerful computer with a large storage capacity. • Linking workstations allows users to share files, data, and printers, send e-mails, and access the Internet.

  6. The Computer Workstation • A well-organized computer workstation is important for both business and home use. • Well-designed workstations can help workers: • reduce stress • avoid straining their eyes, neck, shoulders, and wrists • Increases efficiency

  7. The Computer Workstation • To create a safe and comfortable computer workstation: • Place the tools you need most, close to you. • Place your monitor at or just below eye level and at arm’s length. • Keep your wrists straight when you type. • Use a chair that is adjustable, and keep it at a height that suits you. • Position your chair so that it supports your lower back. • Keep your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest.

  8. Computers As Learning Tools • Businesses also use computers to provide workers with the information, tools, and training they need to do their job. • Some training companies specialize in online education and tutorials for workers. • Training with simulation software lets employees practice new task at their own pace. • E-learning allows workers to be trained in an efficient and cost effective way.

  9. Parts of a Computer System • 3 main parts to a computer system: • Hardware • Microprocessor • Memory • Input/Output devices • Data and storage devices • Software • Data • Characters • Sounds • Graphics • numbers

  10. Microprocessors • A microprocessor is a small computer chip, the brain of the computer. • It is also called the CPU (Central Processing Unit). • Receives instructions and carries them out at extremely high speeds. • Each chip contains millions of circuits for data storage.

  11. Microprocessors • Examples of devices that use computer chips: • calculators • PDAs • Electronic toys • Mobile phones

  12. Memory • Memory is hardware that stores information for instant retrieval and processing. • When a computer is using information, it stores it in random access memory. • As soon as you turn off the computer, RAM loses information

  13. Input & Output Devices • An input device is hardware that is used for entering data into a machine, such as a computer. • Input devices include: • Keyboards • Computer mice • Touchpads • Joysticks • scanners

  14. Input & Output Devices • An output device is hardware that is used for producing results from a machine. • Output devices include: • Computer monitors • Printers • Fax machines • speakers

  15. Data Storage Devices • Data storage devices save information for later use. • Data storage devices include: • CD-ROM drives • DVD drives • Portable storage devices are also popular because they can be easily moved from one machine to another. • Disks • Flash drives • DVDs

  16. Data Storage • Data storage is measured in: • 1 Kilobyte: 1,024 bytes • 1 Megabyte: 1,024 kilobytes • 1 Gigabyte: 1,024 megabytes • 1 Terabyte: 1,024 gigabytes

  17. What is hardware? • The physical parts of a computer. • Hardware can be external or internal. • External: located outside of the system unit • Internal: located inside the system unit of the computer

  18. Printer Keyboard Mouse Head Set Speakers Headphones Monitor Tower External Hardware • **All external hardware must be connected to the tower through a port.

  19. Parts of the Computer Worksheet

  20. Internal Hardware: located inside • Power Supply: provides the electricity for the computer • to run • Video Card: controls the graphics that are displayed on the monitor • Modem: connects computers to a network and allows them to communicate through the internet • RAM: Random Access Memory • Temporary location for computer to hold data

  21. Internal Hardware • Motherboard: Main circuit board of a computer • All computer system components connect to it. • BIOS: Basic Input/Output System • Wakes up computer and reminds it what to do. • Hard Drive: Information in the computer is stored here • on magnetic cylinders • CPU: Central Processing Unit • The brains of the computer. • Floppy Disk Drive, CD-ROM Drive, Sound Card

  22. Labeling Worksheet 6. CD-ROM Drive 1. Power Supply 7. Hard Drive 8. Floppy Disk Drive 2. Video Card 9. RAM 3. Sound Card 10. CPU 4. Modem 11. BIOS 5. Motherboard

  23. Warm Up • Log on • Open your Ch. 19 Notes

  24. Software Programs • Computers are just machines and require instruction from people. • Software is referred to as a program or an application.

  25. What is software? • The instructions, also called computer programs, • that are used to tell a computer what it should do. • What software have you used?

  26. Computer Care & Safety **Computers need special care and attention to work properly. • Never spray the monitor or any part of the computer with glass cleaner. • Computer parts should kept as dust-free as possible. • Keep all liquids and food away from computer. • Never use your computer during a storm. • Use anti-virus software to keep your computer safe. • Never open an email attachment unless you know and trust the person.

  27. Computer Care & Safety • Canned air is a great way to clean all computer parts. • Never remove the cover of your tower to clean the internal hardware. Let a professional handle that. • After installing a new program, test your computer for any errors. • Downloading from the internet can subject your computer to new viruses. • Surge protectors help in the event of a storm; however, they can fail at times.
