Once,Goyawassummonedtothepalaceforpaintingportraitsforthe King. CharlesIVpraisedhimandsaidthat“You’rethegreatestpainterinSpain, onlyyouqualifytopaintfortheroyalfamily.Today,Irequestyoutodrawa familyportraitforme,ifyoupaintwell,Iwillrewardyou”.

Someoneheardabouttheanecdotelaterandcametoaskhimwhyhedidnot paintthehands.Hisanswerwasexcellent,hesaidthat:”Thoseso-called princesareparasitesonlygoodatopeningtheirmouthsandeating,theyhave nohands.That’safact.” Oneday,adoctorwhowasadmiringGoyacommissionedhimtodepicta portraitforhim.WhenGoyafinished,hesaidgladly:”Ihearthatyouarevery principledanddonoteasilydrawthehandsforpeople.Butyoudrawbothmy handsonthispainting,I’mgreatlyhonored.ThusIwillpayhugesumof moneytothankyou”. “Isthattrue?”Goyautteredasneerandsaid:“DoyouknowwhyIpaintboth ofyourhandsonthepicture?Donotbehappytooearly.Ijustwanttolet everyonetoseethehandsof“murderer”.So,doyoustillwanttothankme?” Atthistime,thedoctor’sfaceturnedgreen.Itturnedoutthatthedoctor seemedlikeanelegantgentleman.Butinfact,hewasaruthlessmurderer.He oncemurderedhisfriendsinordertotakeawaythebeautifulandcharming wifeofhisfriend. Thehandsonthepictureglowedevilredbloodfaintly. Itappearsthat,paintingthehandsornotmeansharshcriticism.Themost valuablethingwasthat,asacourtpainter,Goyawasabletoattackthe decadentrulersandugly,darksidesofthesocietyruthlesslyandcleverly.This madehisportraitstakeoffthehypocriticalcloakandbecomeamirror reflecting“realities.”
