  8. Piaget’s sources of continuity of development

  9. Piaget’s sources of discontinuity

  10. Piaget’s Sensorimotor stage of development (birth to 2-years of age) • Cognitive development occurs through sensory and motor experiences with the world. • The child is “hard wiring” with: • Reflexes • sensation & perception • and the processes of assimilation, accommodation & equilibration.

  11. Six sub-stages of Sensorimotor development

  12. Six sub-stages of Sensorimotor development

  13. Six sub-stages of Sensorimotor development

  14. Piaget’s Preoperational Stage (2 to 7-years) • The explosion of language • Proliferation of object naming • Grammar • Monologue and parallel discourse

  15. Piaget’s Preoperational Stage (2 to 7-years) • The explosion of language • Proliferation of object naming • Grammar • Monologue and parallel discourse

  16. Piaget’s Preoperational Stage (2 to 7-years) • Symbolic representation • Pretend play • Novel uses of objects • Problem-solving • Tool use

  19. Piaget’s Preoperational Stage (2 to 7-years)

  20. Piaget’s Concrete Operations Stage (7 to 12-years) • All of the things they couldn’t do in Preoperational Stage they now can do. • Not Egocentric; good perspective-taking • No Centration; can manipulate multiple variables in mind • “Conservation” concept: liquid, mass & number. • Things can change their outward appearance, yet maintain the underlying principals of what they are. • Reasoning now occurs with multiple dimensions.

  21. Piaget’s Concrete Operations Stage (7 to 12-years) • Perspective taking is fluid between different situations and individuals. • Understand 1st vs. 2nd person perspective

  22. Piaget’s Concrete Operations Stage (7 to 12-years) • Where reasoning breaks down: difficulty with abstraction and hypothetical.

  23. Piaget’s Formal Operations Stage (12-years and beyond)
