Designing MPA Networks MV Erdmann USAID’s Natural Resources Management Program Indonesia
Important Considerations in Designing an MPA Network • Representative- of all major marine habitats • Connected-via larval dispersal and juv./adult migration • Resilient - “Survivability” in the face of global (climate) change • Politically/Socially Acceptable - to relevant stakeholders
Applied models are in their infancy... • Existing networks - GBR, FKNMS, etc • Networks under design - probably many, but focus on Sala et al (Science 298:1991-1993) for Gulf of California
Salient Features of Sala et al (2002) Gulf of California MPA Network Model: • 10 distinct habitats along 1000km latitude • Goal of protecting 20% of each representative habitat and 100% of rare habitats • 100% of known SPAGs, >50% of nurseries (mangroves) in no-take reserves • Spacing between reserves does not exceed 100km-average of 40km (based on connectivity arguments) • Individual reserves at least 50km in breadth (250,000 hectares) • Biologically optimal model vs. reduced social conflict model not appreciably different in terms of area protected • Resilience/survivability not explicitly dealt with • Social/political acceptability - to be determined!!!
