  1. Adding Value to the Broadband Revolution G. D. Redmill, Director, EMEA Market and Business Development

  2. Thought 1: Fixed Minutes Declining Fixed minutes are in decline: broadband and mobile are responsible 250000 200000 Non-geo (including dial-up) Voice calls (excl. non-geo) 150000 Millions of minutes Forecast non-geo 100000 Forecast voice calls 50000 0 95/96 97/98 99/00 01/02 03/04 05/06 07/08 Financial year Source: Ofcom, Analysys

  6. Everything Changes • Not every network will move to 21C configuration overnight • Will take years • In the meantime, Broadband adoption is booming • Voice minutes are bundled, low cost or even free • As markets develop, users will demand more than access • How do operators evolve to differentiate their products, maintain and grow their positions? • For enterprises? • For consumers?

  7. Services are (part of) the Solution • Rich portfolio of services allows • Better leverage of network resources • Better return on investment • Better ability to MAINTAIN position • Better opportunity to ENHANCE profit margin • Better subscriber retention • Voice bundles are cheap / free • Services drive ARPU • Even if services are free, basic offer is essential • Must develop cheaply • Have low cost of launch and failure • Invent new, expensive services • Customer service • QoS / QA

  9. Service Challenges • IMS promises to provide converged service framework • Eliminating stovepipes • Reusing resources (e.g. media ports) • No serious challenger • Cannot justify replacement of entire service infra. overnight (remember IN?) • IP migration variable • But, IMS is highly decomposed, allowing selective adoption…

  10. Leverage Decomposition to Build Profit • IMS can be implemented piecemeal • Select components necessary for specific applications with ROI • Deploy Media Gateways to add NGN services to legacy networks • Operators must look for applications that give them the quickest returns • What are these applications likely to be? • Key areas: • Legacy migration / service preservation (“service emulation”) • New services

  11. Live Video Messaging Deployment – TMN Service Features • 3G Video Call Answering • Message drop-off • Subscriber retrieval • PC Call Answering • Subscriber retrieval • 3G to SIP PC Video Call • 3G Video Portal Media Server Features • Video playback and recordingthrough VoiceXML

  14. IBM - Multiplayer Gaming Scenario Description The IMS-enabled Multi-Player gaming Service is a an example of a composite service built on the IBM IMS Solution, and relying on independent runtime components that are orchestrated for providing a coherent and enhanced service experience • Gaming and Conferencing at the same time • Allows you to • plan game strategy or • simply tell your opponent how bad they are

  20. Conclusion • IMS is key to a converged, more efficient service core • Yielding new revenue (profit) opportunities • Offering reduced OPEX • Services alone justify ROI • Implement IMS piecemeal to support migration strategy and launch attractive services with SnowShore IP Media Server • Transport migration is important • Media Gateways allow IMS to be leveraged in a converged / legacy environment • Launch new services via IMS with Media Gateway to support interworking
