Indian Power Demand vs Supply Source: CEA – Monthly Review of Power Sector (February 2012)
India – Installed Capacity Source: CEA – Monthly Review of Power Sector (Dec 2011)
Primary Energy Requiredby 2017 120 GW of electrical output needs: • Coal - 600 MTPA • Australia’s TOTAL ANNUAL PRODUCTION OR • LNG – 200 MTPA • Current world market 237 MTPA
Solar – 2022 • National Solar Mission - 20 GW • State Missions - 15 GW • National Policies (3%) - 80 GW • Note PLF’s for solar • REC based projects - 100 GW • Grid Parity - 100 GW Total (Allowing for “overlap”) 150GW Approx market share 6%
India and Energy • Conclusions • Domestic coal and gas production will not meet India’s primary energy needs • India needs to invest enormous sums in infrastructure to import and distribute coal and gas • At unprecedented rates • Unlikely to be achieved in next 5 years
The Role for Solar Solar has enormous potential, because • India has not become part of the globalised market, and will continue to do so, because • India will have to become part of the globalised market.
