  1. This is my father’s world The story of Mankind How humans were given custody of the world

  2. Our mandate • God rules over His creation • “The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!” (Psalm 99:1) • He delegated some aspects of that role to us (Genesis 1:28) • We abdicated to Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4) through sin

  3. Our mandate • We are to harvest the world for life’s necessities (Genesis 1:29; 9:3) • Not for prideful ends (Job 31:24-28) • Not for selfish ends (1 Timothy 6:17-19) • We are to subjugate the animals (James 3:7) • When their power seems beyond us, we trust in Him (Job 41:1-12, 1 Samuel 17:34-36)

  4. Our failure • Injustice abounds because we avoid accountability for our choices • “If you see oppression of the poor and denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight; for one official watches over another official, and there are higher officials over them.” (Ecclesiastes 5:8)

  5. Our failure • Ugliness abounds because we ignore long-term consequences in pursuit of short-term exploitation (Proverbs 30:18-20) • “The leech has two daughters, ‘Give,’ ‘Give.’ ” (Proverbs 30:15)

  6. Our failure • Violence abounds because we do not respect the greatest creation of all • “You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:17-18)

  7. Our failure • Depravity abounds because we reward people for sinful choices (Isaiah 5:18-23) • Trusting ourselves for moral decisions (v.21) • Honoring people for excessive behavior (v.22) • Waiting for God to fix things, and assuming they must not be broken if He doesn’t (v.19)

  8. Our stewardship • God’s gifts should be used responsibly • Abilities (1 Peter 4:10) • Possessions (Matthew 24:45-47) • The gospel (1 Corinthians 4:4) • God condemns reckless destruction as self-centered and petty (Jonah 4:11)

  9. Our stewardship • Proper use is not reckless • Harvesting materials (1 Chronicles 22:14) • Harvesting animals (2 Chronicles 7:4) • Abusing our trust is a sin against our Father, not our “mother”
