It works

  8. The AVerMedia Doc-Cam • Thank you to ComputersNow for the loan of this great visual tool • AVerVisionCP155 - $900.90 inc GST • 5 year warranty • Ph. Joel Cooper on 02 9951 7979 to buy • They are very good.

  9. But iPad is a Consumer Device. • It’s a FIRST generation, personal tablet computer designed for the masses • It expects a direct internet connection, either wirelessly or 3G to work fully • “Personal” means it’s designed for ONE user – sharing is its weakness • App installation and management can be an issue (iTunes/credit cards etc)

  10. iPad Wi-Fi at School What works? What DOESN’T work? App Store / iTunes YouTube Any App that needs an Internet connection i.e. Just about every fun, practical, useful, powerful reference or communication app that exists for the iPad • Safari Web Browsing(but not Flash sites) • DET Email & Calendar • APPS that do NOT need Internet Connection eg. • Offline games • Offline educational apps or utilities

  11. Sorry, Why Don’t iPad Apps work at School via Wi-Fi?? • NSW DET uses Authenticated Internet • DET Portal ID and Password for each user • While the iPad wireless settings allow for proxy and authentication (Safari is OK), the Apps tend to want to connect directly • The DET Proxy does not allow for this • Apps need to cater for the proxy, but don’t • Software maturity may resolve this in time

  12. 3G iPad Anywhere $$$ $$$ 3G iPad 3G plus Wi-Fi

  13. The iPad 3G in Action. • Time to see the iPad connected in a school with 3G! • [Press the button on the AVermedia Document Camera now Paul]

  14. iPad School Concerns. • It’s personal. Your Email, Facebook, Twitter are locked in. Share your iPad? Share your accounts • They are still costly, starting at $629 each • iTunes and App Licencing are quite complicated • 3G ain’t free • If you use a 3G connection, you BYPASS DET Filters and security – potential critical incidents await • The App-DET Proxy issue is a more than likely a deal-breaker. It’s no good if the iPad is crippled.

  15. So, Should You Buy an iPad? • For Personal use? • YES – they are great. • For School use? • NO – wait for something more appropriate
