  2. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used when taking electrical measurements to reduce the possibility of an injury.

  3. The International Electrotechnical Commis-sion (IEC) standard 61010 classifies the applications in which test instruments are used into four measurement categories (Category I–Category IV).

  4. Measurements taken with a portable oscilloscope are typically displayed as a number or waveform.

  5. DC voltage can be constant or varying and range from half-wave to full-wave rectified AC.

  6. AC voltages are distributed as single-phase or three-phase, and AC motors are rated for use on single-phase or three-phase systems.

  7. AC voltage can be measured and dis-played as an average, rms, peak, or peak-to-peak value in the form of sine waves.

  8. Horizontal and vertical axes divide an oscilloscope display screen into equal divisions while a trace is established on the screen before a circuit under test is connected.

  9. Portable oscilloscopes have mechanisms that allow horizontal and vertical adjustments to be made to the displayed information.

  10. The horizontal and vertical positioning adjustment on a portable oscilloscope can be used to overlay two different measured values.

  11. Depending on the circuit or equipment measured, waveforms as shown on a portable oscilloscope display can represent linear or nonlinear loads.

  12. A displayed wave-form can identify such problems as loss of signal, distorted signals, clipped signals, transient voltages, or ringing.
