Fire/Heat Safety • Be aware of flames, sparks, or heat before working with flammable materials. • When heating chemicals or solutions in a test tube, do not point the test tube toward anyone. • Avoid using open flame & never walk away when using open flame. • Use tongs or insulated holders when handling heated objects. • Know the location and use of the fire-safety blankets fire and extinguisher (PASS).

  3. Safety with Gases & Inhalants • Do not inhale any gas or vapor unless directed to do so by your teacher. • WAFT any scent to your nostrils ensure that you do not destroy the mucus membranes of your reparatory system. • Handle materials that emit vapors or gases in a well ventilated area. • Use the chemical fume hood as specified in the lab or if there is any question of the fumes. Should have used a fume hood!

  4. Dissection Care & Safety • Treat specimen with upmost respect and kindness. • Mishandling or abusing any animal will not be tolerated. • Gloves and/or masks are recommended. • Scalpel blades should be replaced on a regular basis. • Dull blades = bad incisions & cut fingers. • Use extreme care when handling all sharp and pointed instruments, such as scalpels, probes, and knives. • Do not cut specimen while holding them in your hand.

Hygienic Care • Inform teacher of any allergies/sensitivities to latex, peanuts, plants, animals, odors, etc. • Use proper technique when handling bacteria or other microorganisms (Petri dishes). • Wear closed-toe shoes during all wet labs. • Tie back hair, roll up sleeves, take off long jewelry. • Do not apply cosmetics/lotions/sprays in the lab. • Wash your hands with soap and water after each lab, as hand sanitizer is not an effective method alone. • Spill of caustic material on clothing • Get to safety shower ASAP. Remove affected clothing and rinse 15 minutes. • Permanent skin damage can occur from chemical spills.

  6. Chemical Safety • Wear gloves when prompted. • Read the label of a chemical carefully. • Know location of eye wash and shower stations. • Always handle chemicals with care. • Do not mix any chemicals unless instructed to do so by your teacher. • Do not pour water in to a strong acid or base. • Do not return unused chemicals to the stock container. • Inspect glassware for chips or cracks. • Dispose of broken glass in specified container.

  7. Proper cleaning procedure • Soap, Rinse, and Disinfect all work surfaces, instruments, and aprons after each lab period. • Dispose of all sharp objects and contaminated materials as directed by your teacher. • Only perform experiments specifically assigned by your teacher. • Familiarize yourself with the lab and any safety precautions before entering the lab. • Clean your work area at the end of each lab period. • The teacher will clear you to leave. • Immediately report any accident, incident, or hazard – no matter how trivial –to the teacher.

Safety equipment & tools • Wear Safety Equipment as directed. • Goggles and apron • Emergency Eye Wash Station • Immediately flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. • Hold eyes open with fingers to get under lid. • Know the location of all safety/emergency equipment/procedures used in the laboratory. • Material Safety & Data Sheet: • Know where the MSDS Book is, what it means, and how to read it for important information.

  9. Safety Protocols • NO food or drink in the lab. • NO horseplay or loud voices in the lab. • Keep workstation neat, clean, & uncluttered. • Understand what you are doing in the lab before beginning the lab experiment. • Keep hands away from face while working. • Work with a partner, but produce your OWN answers.

  10. Know the safety symbols & hazard ratings Red = Fire Hazard 4- Below 70ºF 3- Below 100ºF 2- Below 200ºF 1- Above 200ºF 0- Will Not Burn Blue = Health Hazard 4- Deadly 3- Extreme Danger 2- Hazardous 1- Slightly Hazardous 0- Normal Material Yellow = Reactivity Hazard 4- May Detonate 3- Shock /Heat May Detonate 2- Violent Chemical Changes 1- Unstable, if Heated 0- Stable White = Special Hazard Oxidizer – OX Corrosive – COR Use No Water – W Radiation –
