Prefixes [pre (before) + fix (fasten) = fasten before] are groups of letters placed before words or roots. Prefixes modify the meanings of words and roots.

  3. How Words Work interrupt (verb): to stop, to break in (usually with questions) inter (prefix = to throw something between other things) rupt (root = to break or burst) It's impolite to interrupt someone while they are speaking.
