  1. Membership in USTA is required and costs $44 for one year. In addition, there is a $23 fee to sign up for a team. There will be teaching professionals to teach you how to play, conduct team practices, make player line-ups for matches, and be on-hand to help with scoring and questions about rules. A coach/team captain will provide information on signing up for USTA membership and help you establish your NTRP rating as a 2.5 or 3.0. Teams will form in late August. The format at 3.0 is for two courts to play singles and three courts to play doubles. The teaching pros will help with forming the teams. We plan to have three optional practices starting on Sunday, August 11 from 2:00 – 4:00pm and on the next two Sundays in August same time. Any 2.5 or 3.0 can attend practice. You do not have to attend all the practices, just come to ones you can. There will be about two league matches per week in October and November. Matches are scheduled in advance by the USTA League Coordinator for the whole season, so you can work out your availability to play. One team from this league is eligible to advance to the USTA League State Championships in Mobile in June 2013. The practices are tailored for men who are new to tennis and will focus on scoring, rules, and basic hitting skills. The practices cost $6 each for court fees plus a one-time charge of $10 for a course handbook. All matches and practices will be at the Huntsville Tennis Center (HTC). In case of inclement weather, verify that the practices will be held by checking the HTC web site at www.huntsvilletenniscenter.com. What to do now? Attend the first practice at 2:00pm, Aug. 11 or e-mail Stephen Kee at huntsvilletennis@gmail.com and indicate that you want to be contacted when teams form. If you are currently a 3.0 and would like to captain a team, contact Stephen Kee as well. If you wish, you can arrange for a lesson with a teaching pro at Huntsville Tennis Center (HTC) (256) 883-3986, Madison Dublin Park (256) 694-5720, or Hampton Cove (256) 533-3011. Clinics and/or lessons with a pro will help you learn technique (hitting, serving, etc.) more quickly. 2. INTRODUCTION TO LEAGUE TENNIS FOR MEN This league is designed for men who are new to tennis and who are at least 18 years old. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has established the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) in order to classify players according to their ability so that league matches are more competitive and more fun. The 3.0 Level is for players who are new to tennis to play with others at their skill level. Don’t worry, if you are not ‘ready’ for league tennis, the whole idea of this league is to have fun and learn to play matches. USTA 2.5 AND 3.0 MEN August 2013
