  2. Solar System Concept Map Terms solar system rotate orbit revolve planet gravity asteroid comet moon Sun Earth Use these terms to create a concept map. Remember: Terms in circles Arrows connecting terms. Descriptor on your arrows.

  3. Understanding Scale Standard 4, Objective 1: Compare the size and distance of objects within systems in the universe. ILOs: Sort and sequence data according to given criteria.

  4. Understanding Scale Engage/Explore: Small and Large & Near and Far Explain: Light Years and Powers of Ten Website or Scale of the Universe Animation Elaborate: Distances in Space Museum Evaluate: Distance and Scale Worksheet

  5. Constellations Standard 4, Objective 2: Describe the appearance and apparent motion of groups of stars in the night sky relative to Earth and how various cultures have understood and used them. ILOs: Science is a way of knowing that is used by many people, not just scientists.

  6. Constellations Engage: Constellation Myths, Interconnections pg. 258 Explore: Uncle Al’s Star Wheel Explain: Kinesthetic Astronomy, pg. 27 - 28 Elaborate: Constellation Tubes Evaluate: Adopt-A-Constellation Project

  7. Constellations - Engage

  8. Constellations - Engage Callisto was a beautiful servant with a son named Arcas. Hera, the wife of Zeus, was very jealous of Callisto’s beauty. So Zeus hid Callisto from his wife, Hera, by turning Callisto into a bear. Arcas grew up to become a hunter. One day while he was hunting, the bear Callisto heard Arcas' voice and rushed to greet her son. Arcas, not knowing the bear was his mother, was about to kill her when Zeus intervened and sent both mother and son into the sky as the Greater and Lesser Bears. The way Zeus got the bears into the sky explains why their tails are so long, apparently Zeus grabbed them by their tails and swung them around over his head and finally flung them into the sky, and that is why these two bears have long tails!

  11. Tools of An Astronomer Standard 3, Objective 2: Describe the use of technology to observe objects in the solar system and relate this to science’s understanding of the solar system. ILOs: Understand that science investigations us a variety of methods and do not always use the same set of procedures.

  12. Tools of An Astronomer Engage: Looking Up From Here Explore: Make Your Own Telescope Explain: How Does a Telescope Work? Elaborate/Evaluate: Small Group Telescope/Probe Research

  13. Looking Up From Here Why was identifying the objects challenging? How is this activity similar to astronomers looking at objects in space? What tools do astronomers use to view objects in space?

  14. Telescopes Model Telescope Diagram: How does a telescope work?
