When you get to your Japan Deep Thinking Question, please write it on a separate piece of paper. I want you to keep your questions to study from for the quiz Friday.

If you do not have your Japan DBQ, please move to the back of the room and finish it now. We are going to do a Peer Review of this answer. Peer Reviews are helpful when you are learning how to express critical thinking because they make your brain look at the language and the reasoning in a new way. You will need a pen or pencil of a different color than the one the paper in front of you is written in. Please write your name at the bottom of the page after Peer Reviewer:

  9. Please do the following: • Locate the Thesis statement in the student’s answer. It should be one sentence that answers the question, Why does Japan decide to build an empire in Asia? • Underline the Thesis. If there is no Thesis, write Thesis? In the margin. • It should contain the word “because”. Circle the word because. If there is no because write Why next to the sentence.

  10. Locate the reasons given. For each reason, write a number. If only 1 reason is given, you will only have a 1 written at the start of it. If 2 reasons are given, write a 2 next to the second one and so on. • Locate the specific details in each reason. Write letters after each one. If there is only 1 specific detail in the first reason write 1A next to that detail. If there are 2 write 1B next to the second one, and so on. If you can’t find any details, write This Needs Details in the margin.

  11. Locate the explanation for each reason. This will say how the reason given is a cause of Japanese empire building. Put a squiggle line under the explanation. • If you can’t find the explanation, write How is this a cause of Japanese empire building? At the end of the answer.

  12. Now, look for a quote or a reference to a specific document. Put a heart next to each quote or document reference. • If you can’t find one, write This Needs A Quote in the margin.

Axis Aggression Take Aways • Before Starting WWII, Japan, Italy and Germany all test the surrounding countries to see what they will do. • Japan invades Korea, Manchuria and China for resources and power • The USA does nothing in exchange for control of the Philippines. • Europe remains uninterested. • Italy invades Ethiopia • Ethiopia asks the League of Nations for help, but the countries of the League can’t agree on what to do and do nothing. • Germany invades the Rhineland, Austria, and the Sudetenland. • The countries of Europe do nothing, afraid that Germany will start a war they aren’t ready to fight. • The countries of Europe eventually call the Munich Conference and decide to sacrifice Czechoslovakia to Germany in exchange for peace.

Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Take Aways • Add these to the back of pg. 20C • Historically Fascists and Communists HATE each other. • Stalin feared Hitler would start a war before Russia was ready to fight. • He also felt the other countries of Europe would be useless in a war with Germany. • He agrees to the Non Aggression pact to get some of Poland and buy some time for the USSR to build their army. • Hitler doesn’t want to fight on two sides (West and East) • He agrees to the Pact to ensure that he only has to fight one side of Europe at a time.
