  3. Honor Societies areseparate from Georgian Court University Honors Program Besides having different criteria (see end of this PowerPoint), “Georgian Court University Honors Program” students wear a stole at graduation. Honor society members wear cords (see next page).

  4. Advantages of joining an honor society • Honor society certificate and pin • Privilege of wearing cords (of your honor society colors) at graduation. • Recognition at an induction ceremony for hard work of students …and their support system – parents, friends, significant others… • Eligibility to apply for national scholarships and other opportunities through the national/international society

  5. More advantages: • Fellowship - with other GCU students and faculty • Networking Connection - with other honor society members nationally, and in some cases internationally • Leadership opportunities- such as serving as an officer in your honor society • Charitable Works: Opportunity for students to do charitable works either as an individual (e.g., tutoring) OR as a society(e.g., bake sales for charity) – Thereby demonstrating Georgian Court’s commitment to Mercy Core Values

  6. Even more advantages… • Resume builder: Get to include your membership in honor society on your resume for the rest of your life (Employers appreciate the hard work necessary to attain admittance in an honor society). • Discounts on insurance: Some insurance companies give large discounts to people in college-level honor societies (show them your membership card or certificate). • Federal jobs: If you end up working for the federal government, there is an automatic pay raise if you belong to at least one honor society. • U.S. Civil Service Commission jobs: membership in a national honor society is required for hire at G-7 level of job and above.

  7. Types of Honor Societies • Honor societies are separate from HONORS PROGRAM (do not need to be in any Honors Program to get in any honor societies) • There are two types of honor societies: 1.) General honors (any major) - awarded when eligible, may be specific honor 2.) Specific majors (or minors) honors - usually awarded in junior or senior year • In some cases one does not even need a major or even a minor to be admitted, if you have enough courses in that area (may need only what might be designated as a “concentration”)

  8. How do I get in to an honor society? • Generally, students with high grades who meet the pre-requisites of the honor society are invited by the campus chapter via postal letter or email. • Some honor societies need you to take the initiative and apply…, and it never hurts to ask if you are unsure! • If you feel that you might be eligible and have not received a letter in a timely manner to an honor society, you can inquire with the chapter faculty advisor (who is one of the faculty at the university), whose name you can get from the department office or Student Life office. There is a chance that you may have been overlooked due to computer grading: (for example, for the Freshman Honor Society, if you were a freshman at GCU and came in with a number of credits, your records may be overlooked since your credits may bump you up to a sophomore level by your second semester). EVERY attempt is made not to overlook students, but sometimes it happens!

  9. What is my best strategy for getting into an honor society? • Generally good grades are the best way – so study hard AND look for help if you need it. The Academic Development Center, located in the basement of the GCU library is available for everyone – from struggling students to those who want to put the finishing touches on their understanding or their assignments or papers. • Your honor society may also be looking for outside activity too, such a club membership or service hours, so check! GOOD LUCK!

  10. Once I am in? • Once you are invited, there is generally a one-time $ fee to be a member. BUT once you join, you can include the honor society on your resume for the rest of your life! (Note: some societies require yearly dues to be considered active members and eligible for those privileges. Of these, some societies also have lifetime membership fees that you can pay and then not have to pay the yearly fees) • Honor Societies generally have honor society meetings and activities such as fundraisers and charity drives or collections while you are an undergraduate student. Sometimes there are alumni activities too! • Some (but not all) honor societies may require service hours as a pre-requisite and/or post-requisite (this is usually explicitly stated).
