  2. Documentary on Alcohol • http://www.drugfreeworld.org/#/documentaries/truth-about-drugs-documentary-alcohol

  3. Alcohol • Alcohol found in beverages such as beer, wine, and liquor is ethanol • Ethanol is produced when yeast changes sugar into carbon dioxide and alcohol • Grapes, berries, and malted grains can be used as a source of sugar for yeast • The proof of an alcoholic drink is a measure of the percentage of alcohol in the beverage • 100 proof vodka is 50% alcohol

  4. Alcohol • Classified as a depressant • Slows down vital functions • Slurred speech, unsteady movement, inability to reach quickly, poor muscle coordination • Reduces a person’s ability to think rationally and distorts one’s judgment

  5. Short term effects on the body • Bloodstream • Blood vessels widen • More blood flows to the skin’s surface • Drinker feels warm as the skin flushes • Drinker’s body temperature drops as the increased blood flow to the surface allows body heat to escape

  6. Short term effects on the body • Causes the liver to work harder • Liver metabolizes about one alcoholic drink per hour • Drinking more than that causes intoxication and an alcohol build up and stresses the liver

  7. Short term effects on the body • Brain • Alcohol slows the speed of some brain activities • Depresses the part of the brain that controls breathing and heartbeat • Blackouts: period of time that the drinker cannot recall, although he is talking, walking, and in control

  8. Short Term Effects on the Mind • Kidneys • Alcohol prevents the release of body chemicals that regulate how much urine the kidneys make • Kidneys may product more urine than usual

  9. Short term effects on the body • Causes dehydration • Occurs because breaking down alcohol requires water • Kidneys produce more urine • Water used to break down alcohol is taken from other parts of the body including the brain • The cells of the brain shrink and may even begin to die • Many symptoms of a hangover are a result of severe dehydration

  10. Short Term Effects on the Mind • About 15 minutes after finishing 1 or 2 drinks, most people begin to feel more relaxed and more talkative • After 2 drinks, a drinker loses the ability to make good decisions, pay attention, follow complex thoughts, or cope with difficult situations • After a few more drinks, person loses ability to focus his eyes, slurs his speech, loses coordination, loses judgment

  11. BAC • Blood alcohol concentration: amount of alcohol in a person’s blood • Factors that affect a person’s BAC • Gender • Weight • Amount of food in the stomach • Concentration of alcohol in beverages consumed • Rate of consumption

  12. BAC • DUI • 21+ years of age = .08% and higher • Younger than 21 years of age = .01% and higher • http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm

  13. Long term health risks • Tolerance • Body becomes accustomed to or • builds up resistance to a drug • Causes the body to need increasingly larger amounts of alcohol

  14. Long term health risks • Dependence/Addiction • Body develops a resistance to a drug and requires the drug to function normally • Withdrawal symptoms

  15. Long term health risks • Liver damage • Alcohol interferes with livers ability to break down fats • Liver begins to fill with fat from heavy drinking • Cirrhosis: useless scar tissue replaces normal liver tissue

  16. Males – 5 drinks at one time • Females – 4 drinks at one time • 90% of alcohol consumption for youth under the age of 21 in the US is in the form of binge drinking • Why is this so popular?
