  1. Engineering Integration Supporting the NCEPU 2+2 programme in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Bath

  2. Background 2008 – Joint education programme with North China Electric Power University NCEPU students study for 2 years in China and then join the second year of Bath BEng programme in either Electrical Power Engineering or Electrical and Electronic Engineering. 1st cohort arrived in September 2009

  3. Initial Concerns • Integration of NCEPU students with existing multicultural cohort • Lack of knowledge of UK academic and social culture • Shortage of time for adaptation to UK academic culture • Background subject knowledge • Language issues

  4. Pre- Arrival LTEO worked with department to support staff in • ensuring an inclusive approach to teaching • designing an effective induction programme • Provision of information to NCEPU students Produced a video to capture Bath life and the experiences of Chinese students in terms of studying and social aspects

  5. Induction NCEPU students arrived two weeks prior to start of semester Full social and academic induction programme • Short laboratory project • Library and ICT inductions • Personal Tutor meetings • Cultural visits • Social outings www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm

  6. Mentoring scheme • Initial hopes were to set up mentoring scheme with 2nd year mentors • Mainly weekly social meetings • Mentees found scheme useful in helping them to adapt to UK lifestyle and speaking English “Help us to enjoy life in the UK quickly and give us helpful advice about studying” Many NCEPU students are keen to mentor new cohort

  7. Academic experience • Alternative module designed to cover aspects of 1st year programme which had not been delivered in China • Different approach to topic • Unfamiliarity with MCQ assessment style

  8. Annual event ‘ Mouse Race’ – semester long project In pairs, students design and build small electronic cars to travel round a track Opportunities for integration but also competition!

  9. Student Feedback • Bath chosen due to quality of dept (rated 10th in RAE) • Also felt Bath was a safe place to study with opportunities to experience both UK and other international cultures • Many commented on quietness and beauty of city and campus but hated dark winter evenings! • Interviewed students at end of year to capture their experience

  10. Staff feedback • Very positive • Reported very good levels of engagement and interaction • Work ethic inspired home students to work harder! • Some language issues • Initially demanded high levels of academic support

  11. Challenges • Resources – initial induction and student support very time consuming • Language – quite differing levels of language competency but also NCEPU student reported difficulty in understanding international staff • Acceptance by and integration with existing cohort • Arrangement of work placement opportunities

  12. Looking forward Rolling programme of recruitment -27 students in 2010/11. Competition from other universities Many of current NCEPU cohort have expressed an interest in continuing to MSc study Dissemination of practice Reassessment of support provision
