  2. What needs to be considered • Audience: Who is your audience? Are you writing for a teacher or is it a larger population? • Purpose: What do you want to accomplish? There are three purposes for writing- to inform, to entertain, to persuade. • You are writing to inform! That means this is FACT based! • Occasion: What are you writing? Is this a lab report, test question, or project?

  3. Topic Sentence • Just like all other format paragraphs your topic sentence should contain your subject and “opinion”. • If you are answering a question, simply restate the question as your topic sentence. • Your “opinion” should be a given Example: What is a cell? TS- A cell is the smallest unit that can perform all life processes.

  4. Concrete Details • These are FACT statements or examples • When a question asks your to provide examples (generally two) those examples belong in the concrete detail Example: For example, cells can be unicellular or multicellular. In addition, each cell is at least somewhat self-contained and self-maintaining.

  5. Commentary • In these sentences you will explain your concrete details • The explanation is FACT based! No opinions! • Remember: our purpose is to inform • What does this mean? • Facts only • No “flowery” language Example: (CD 1) Some organisms, such as most bacteria, are unicellular. Other organisms, such as humans, are multicellular. (CD 2) Cells can take in nutrients, convert these nutrients into energy, carry out specialized functions, and reproduce as necessary. Each cell stores its own set of instructions for carrying out each of these activities.

  6. Concluding Sentence • Restate your topic sentence • Restate means that you need to use different words! • Make sure the subject and opinion is very clear! • Use a concluding transition Example: A cell is the smallest unit of an organism that is classified as living, and is often called the building block of life.

  7. Important Points to Remember • FACT based writing (purpose to inform) • No “flowery” language • Overly complex sentences will distract readers • Keep your writing clear and precise • NO PERSONAL PRONOUNS! • You are not the expert therefore I do not want to read about your opinion
