Mono Lake: Applying Science to Solve an Environmental Problem • Mono Lake: large salt lake in California where millions of birds fed and nested and where several organisms lived in abundance • 1940’s- Los Angeles used all stream water for city’s water supply • Lake began to dry out with no stream input • Concern grew that organisms would die and that birds would no longer be able to feed there • Panel studied future of lake without stream input & discovered that lake would become too small & too salty for organisms to live • Courts stopped most of removal of water that flowed into lake • By 2008, lake water hadn’t reached level approved by courts • Removal of any stream water was stopped; lake and ecosystem were saved
