What are two examples of Roman-influenced art in modern life? Romans created realistic statues and colorful mosaics. They also painted frescoes that might show three-dimensional landscapes. Romans made decorative glass bottles, developed the art of gem cutting and metalwork, and created cameos. Some examples of Roman-influenced art forms today are murals in restaurants, banks, and other buildings; lifelike statues; cut gems and cameos.

Roman-influenced architecture includes the Capitol in Washington, D.C., which has a dome and arches. The Arc de Triomphe in Paris is one huge arch.

English also borrows heavily from Latin. Many modern English words start with Latin prefixes or come from Latin roots. Even Latin proverbs are used in the United States. “A stitch in time, saves nine!” The numbers 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 were written as I, X, C, and M. “Out of many, one.”

Stoicism is the belief that a divine intelligence rules all of nature and that a person’s soul is a spark of that intelligence. Stoics wish to live in a way that agrees with nature and to have a good character. The ideas of Roman law and justice live on in documents such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, as well as in modern-day courtrooms. People around the world share the Roman belief that humans have basic and natural rights.

In Rome, all free people were considered citizens and were subject to Roman law. Enjoyed the rights of all Romans, and owed allegiance to the emperor. Today, in the United States, though most citizens are born in the country and immigrants can become citizens of the United States, all citizens share basic rights and must follow the same rules.
