  1. Scientist of the Roman Era By Nancy Mack and Wesley Knox

  2. Ptolemy and Hero Ptolemy.. • Born: C 87 ED • Birthplace: Alexandria, Egypt • Occupation: Astronomer, Mathematician, and Cartographer • Died: C 150 AD Hero of Alexandria.. • Born: c 10 AD • Birthplace: unknown • Occupation: Mathematician • Died: c 70 AD IN THE ON COMING SLIDES, WE ARE GOING TO DISCUSS WHAT EACH SCIENTIST IS NOTED WITH AS ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE PAX ROMANA

  3. About Ptolemy Ptolemy was a man who was very persuasive and influential to many. He had a great interest in outer space, the planets, and a desire to study the moon. To Ptolemy having wisdom of the universe and what was around you gave you great wisdom and allowed you to understand things more clearly.

  4. Ptolemy as an Astronomer He had an assistant named Hipparchus to help guide him in his many labors. Ptolemy is noted with the invention of planet theory, and the discovery of the moon’s evection. He is noted with being the leading finder in ancient astronomy

  5. Ptolemy as a Geographer His geography is divided into eight books . The rest of his work is details regarding positions, such as longitude (platos) and latitude (mekos) and the calculations of the size of the sphere of the earth, and the extended surface that was known back then. In addition, he constructed a series of twenty six maps, together with a general map of the world

  6. About Hero of Alexandria Hero of Alexandria was a Greek geometer and a write of mechanical and physical subjects. There is a theory that he was a pupil of Ctesibius

  7. Hero as a Mathematician He had many geometrical treatises that consisted of ways to determine the area or volumes of solid planes and figures. They also had very close estimates of the square and cubic roots of un squared numbers, and the formula to find the sides of triangles. He is noted with invention of siphons, “Hero’s Fountain,” penny-in-the-slot machines, the force pump, a water organ, and the whole idea of the level-pully system with the lifting of heavy objects

  8. Hero’s Inventions He is noted with invention of siphons, “Hero’s Fountain,” penny-in-the-slot machines or known today as vending machines, the force pump, a water organ, the whole idea of the level-pully system with the lifting of heavy objects, and many devices in the theatre such as the binary system of ropes, knots, and simple machines

  9. The Library of Alexandria The Royal Library of Alexandria is noted as the second largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world. It was the major center of scholarship for a long time. Ptolemy's astronomy books were located in their, as well as some of Hero’s mathematical work, along with many kings, emperors, and other inventors scrolls and books whom had an influence on the PaxRomana.
