Sandford • Background • Dred Scott escapes slavery in Louisiana by retreating to the free state of Illinois • Scott returns to Louisiana, and claims he is free • Ruling • The court ruled that a Black man, slave or free, had no rights under a White man’s government • The ruling also invalidated the Missouri Compromise
