  4. By the end of the Black Death, a third of Europe’s population had been lost. After the Middle Ages, and during the Renaissance, Europe goes through a population boom to rebuild numbers. How did the Bubonic Plague affect Europe?

  5. At first, Europeans were going to far away lands to defend religion. Then they were going to spread religion. The Crusades were very important to the growth of commerce. Why do you think they had such an impact on trade?

  6. Bandits rob European traders along the Silk Road. Europeans wish to find alternate ways to get to Indian and China… preferably a sea route.

  9. The European World Prince Henry the Navigator was an explorer from Portugal. He was very curious about technology and exploration. “Renaissance spirit” The Renaissance spirit was the revival of learning and curiosity.

  10. The Caravel Sails made sailing faster Overall design of ship and hull made travel safer and more efficient Space under-deck made more room for trade goods The ships to the left were called caravels. What do you think some advantages of this new ship were?

  12. African Trade Routes Where did most of the trade routes intersect? Most of the trading routes intersected in major cities. Some were along the Mediterranean.

  13. African Religion Religion was placed in the hands of African tribal/ political leaders. Most areas in African worshipped many different Gods and spirits. How would this lead to conflict once Africans met with different cultures? When Africans met Christians and Muslims they had difficulty in understanding how they believed in just one God. This resulted in many religious and cultural conflicts.

  15. European Slavery African Slavery You were not born into slavery. There were opportunities to move up in status. Slavery was not based on race. Slaves were taught multiple skills. Africans wanted their slaves to be educated. European Slavery • You were born a slave. • There was no opportunity for a slave to become free, unless they made the dangerous attempt at running away. • Slavery emphasized race and fed a social and cultural prejudice.

  19. Indians adjusted their way of life to the land that they lived on. Geography was the most important influence in Native American life. Shellfish, used the ocean to hunt for whales, sea otters, and SALMON. Native Americans did not trade land. Land was “The Source of Life” It was not something to be bought or bartered in trade. They used with land without using it up. Not one land, but many. Deep water fishing, making use of the gushing mountain streams. Adobe warm, dry climate.

  20. Trading Networks Served as the biggest form of tribal awareness. Native Americans traded both short and long distances, and routes were extensive. Social Organization Kinship- family was the most important organizer in society. Division of Labor- assignment of different tasks by gender, age or status.

  21. Religion Great Spirit  Supreme Being spirit and life within all living things. Similar to Africa, Native Americans worshiped different spirits. They had difficulty understanding how Europeans could worship just one.
