Example #1 • A can of insecticide will cover 529 square foot of lawn. • What is the largest square dimension of lawn that this can will cover? • If the Miller’s lawn is 120 feet by 100 ft, how many cans will they need to buy? The dimensions of the coverage square would be 23 ft. by 23 ft. The Millers will need to buy 23 cans of insecticide.

  3. Example #2 A cubic freezer is reported to have 421.875 cubic feet of storage. What is the measure of one of the sides of this freezer? Any one side of the freezer will measure 7.5 feet.

  4. Example #3 The farmer’s square field has an area of 11,664 square feet. He is having trouble with deer eating his crops. He decides to build a fence around the garden. How many feet of fencing will he need? The farmer will need 432 feet of fencing.

  5. Example #4 The formula to calculate the time it takes for an object dropped to hit the ground in seconds is shown below. If a rock is dropped from a height of 18 meters, how long will it take to hit the ground? It will take about 1.06 seconds to drop an object 18 meters.
