  1. ParkMe (now ParkJam) Jacek Kopecký, Prof. John Domingue, KMI, The Open University December 11-12, 2012, Luxembourg

  2. Overview • Scenario • Approach and implementation • Dissemination • Community building • Demo • Work Plan view

  3. Scenario • Parking is a Problem • finding parking can be frustrating and wasteful • the best way to find parking is to know beforehand where the spaces are • Smart parking management infrastructure is expensive • Many people have smartphones • Location data available

  4. Approach and Implementation • Crowdsourcing parking availability data • Location-aware mobile app • Implemented for Android • Based on open data • LinkedGeoDatafrom OpenStreetMap • Snapshot in ParkJam’s triple store • Includes local data sources • OU Security • Plan: Milton Keynes city centre • Publishing an open data source • Car parks: locations, details • Up-to-date availability • RDF web API used by the app

  5. Dissemination • Demo and poster at ESWC, May 2012 • Invited seminar Sep 2012at Birmingham City Univ. • Promotion efforts • Open University • Milton Keynes newspaper • Local BBC radio station • Large local employer • Ongoing: Milton Keynes

  6. Community Building • Facebook presence • Twitter news and interesting trivia • 114 existing installs as of Dec 9 • 214 total (incl. those who uninstalled the app) • So far, community tiny; probably because: • only two areas where the app can clearly and presently provide availability • MK City Centre, Open University campus • anonymity • users don’t see their name next to their submissions

  7. Demo • Scenario 1: driving to work • Show employer campus with parking situation • Set up pinned car parks (favorites) • Look at app near work or when in full car park • Show how to contribute availability, details

  8. Demo Scenario 1

  9. Demo • Scenario 2: city-centre shopping • Show city parking situation • Show how to get an overview of availability • Get directions to a car park

  10. Demo Scenario 2
