XYZ Affair Quasi War Alien and Sedition Acts Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions (nullification) Midnight Judges Create either a word document or google slides that you will share with me when finished (kellie.Pierrot@Cabarrus.k12.nc.us) Each event should include the name, a descriptive definition IYOW, a meme that illustrates the event and 1 sentence explaining your meme/connection. This meme shows that Washington was not bothered by the farmers and was demonstrating federal power.

  20. HAPPY THURSDAY!  1. Why do you think political parties formed so quickly even after Washington warning against them? 2. What issues did Washington leave for John Adams to have to resolve? 3. What policies will John Adams support, now that you know he is a Federalist?

  21. John Adams Wins the 1796 election and has Thomas Jefferson as his Vice President … Why is this going to be an issue? How do we know John Adams?

  22. XYZ AFFAIR France seized American ships to prevent Britain from receiving the goods John Adams sends three diplomats to France to resolve issues with France 3 French agents demanded $250k bribe, $12 million loan to help French fight wars and public apology just to let Americans see French foreign minister Congress canceled its treaties with France and allowed U.S. ships to seize French vessels (QUASI-WAR -> Undeclared Naval War with France) • Congress also set aside money to expand the navy and the army • John Adams is known as the father of the navy

  23. Agree or disagree? “National Security is more important than individual rights.”

  24. ALIEN AND SEDITION ACTS ALIEN ACT- “…Whenever there shall be a declared war between the United States and any foreign nation…the President of the United States shall make all citizens of hostile nations living in the United States…apprehended, restrained, secured and removed as alien enemies.” AKA- Made it easier to deport immigrants (foreign threats) SEDITION ACT- “…Any person who opposes…the government or defames the government or creates any false, scandalous writing against the Congress or the President shall be guilty of high misdemeanor and on conviction [be] fined or imprisoned.” AKA- Illegal to speak out against the government … Why are people going to be upset about this?!

  25. VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY RESOLUTIONS Jefferson and Madison (D-R) Believed that each state had the right to nullify(void) any federal law which the state believed was unconstitutional (Alien and Sedition Acts) No other states approved the resolutions… BUT many citizens became angry at the Federalists and began to shift their support to Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party!

  26. ELECTION OF 1800 Do you think John Adams will win re-election?

  27. ELECTION OF 1800 John Adams (Federalists) Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican) Aaron Burr NASTY ELECTION!!! Jefferson said Adams was a “blind, bald, crippled, toothless man who is a hideous hermaphroditic character with neither the force and fitness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman” Adams said Jefferson was “mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, son of a half-breed Indian squaw” “coward, French radical and infidel who would seize the country’s bibles”

  28. ELECTION OF 1800 Breakdown… Thomas Jefferson 73 electoral votes Aaron Burr 73 electoral votes John Adams 65 electoral votes Goes to the House of Representatives to pick! 30+ straight times voting.. IT’S A TIE! Alexander Hamilton urges Federalists to not vote so Jefferson can win “Lesser of two evils” … Aaron Burr later kills Alexander Hamilton in a duel  “Bloodless Revolution” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSs6xiXON4s

  32. THINK-PAIR-SHARE • Are you going to honor the jobs promised by the old mayor? Or cancel the jobs since they aren’t “official” yet? • Would it make a difference if the perspective employees had worked againstyou in the mayoral election?

  33. MIDNIGHT JUDGES Judiciary Act of 1801 created 16 new federal judges Before leaving office (LITERALLY THE NIGHT BEFORE) Adams appointed Federalists to all these positions Why?

  34. MARBURY V. MADISON (1803) Marbury never received his papers (and awarded his position) so he sues James Madison Supreme Court Chief Justice- JOHN MARSHALL This establishes… JUDICIAL REVIEW: Power to decide whether the laws passed by Congress were constitutional AND the power to strike down those that are NOT constitutional STRENGTHENES the Supreme Court Power! Recap video https://www.history.com/topics/united-states-constitution/marbury-v-madison-video
