  2. What is Linguistics? • A science that studies about language and its related components Language  word sound  word forming processes  word meaning  word in sentence  language and culture  language and its variations  language and brain

Branch or sub field of Linguistics • Phonology  that studies the structure and systematic pattering of sounds in human language • Morphology  that studies the way in which words are constructed or arranged out of smaller meaningful units. • Syntax  that studies the internal structure of sentences and phrases and the interrelationships among the internal parts

Branch or sub field of Linguistics • Semantics  that studies the nature of the meaning of individual words, and the meaning of words grouped into phrases and sentences. • Pragmatics  that studies the use of words (and phrases and sentences) in actual context of discourse • Anthropological linguistics  that studies the interrelationship between language and culture

Branch or sub field of Linguistics • Sociolinguistics  that studies the interrelationships of language and social structure, linguistic variation, and attitudes toward language. • Psycholinguistics  that studies the interrelationships of language and cognitive structures; the acquisitions of language
