  1. EXAMPLES

  2. Example • 56 year old woman in respiratory distress with: • pH 7.31 ( ↓, acidosis, non-compensated) • PC02 74 ( ↑, increased, acidosis) • P02 58 ( ↓, decreased, hypoxemia) • HCO3 25 ( normal range) • Answer: Non-compensated Respiratory Acidosis with (moderate) hypoxemia. Aka – Acute ventilatory failure with hypoxemia

  3. Example • 56 year old woman in previous respiratory distress has an ABG of: • pH 7.31 ( ↓, acidosis, non-compensated) • PC02 54 ( ↑, increased, acidosis) • P02 62 ( ↓, decreased, hypoxemia) • HCO3 26 ( normal range) • Answer: Partially compensated Respiratory Acidosis with (mild) hypoxemia. Aka – Acute ventilatory failure with hypoxemia

  4. Acute Alveolar Hyperventilation with HYPOXEMIA • pH: increased 7.53 • PaCO2: decreased 28 mm Hg • HCO3-: decreased 20 mEq/L • PaO2: decreased 63 mm Hg ABG Changes Example

  5. Chronic Ventilatory Failure pH: 7.38 PaCO2: 66 mm Hg HCO3-: 35 mEq/L PaO2: 63 mm Hg Acute alveolar hyperventilation superimposed on chronic ventilatory failure pH: 7.55 PaCO2: 62 mm Hg HCO3-: 38 mEq/L PaO2: 51 mm Hg

  6. Acute Alveolar Hyperventilation Superimposed on CHRONIC VENTILATORY FAILURE pH: increased 7.55 PaCO2: increased 62 mm Hg HCO3-: increased 38 mEq/L PaO2: decreased 51 mm Hg ABG Changes Example

  7. Metabolic Acidosis pH: decreased 7.26 PaCO2: normal 37 mm Hg HCO3-: decreased 18 mEq/L PaO2: normal 94 mm Hg (or ↓ when lactic (or 52 mm Hg when acidosis is present) lactic acidosis is present) ABG Changes Example

  8. Metabolic Alkalosis pH: increased 7.56 PaCO2: normal 44 mm Hg HCO3-: decreased 27 mEq/L PaO2: normal 94 mm Hg ABG Changes Example
