  2. Continuing Education (CE) or CPD? • Many pharmacists are used to the “30 hour” rule • Attendance at workshops or completion of open learning training meant certificates, accumulate enough certificates and you achieve 30 hours • Flawed system as the impact of the training was not assessed

  3. CPD or CE? • CPD allows you to be more selective, consider your learning needs and your learning styles

  4. CPPE and Reflection • Learning that starts at reflection. Do we always consider periodically what our learning needs are? • The new pharmacy contract gives an opportunity to commence CPD • Review the contract- are there requirements for the new contract that we could identify as a learning need?

  11. Barriers to CPD • “I don’t have enough time to write everything down and record all this CPD” • Have you in the last month “wasted” 30 minutes?

  12. Barriers to CPD • Technology- many pharmacy PMR systems do not have internet access • CPD desktop, many PMR systems will not run CPD desktop, other pharmacy companies may not allow external software to be loaded on their PMR system • Do all pharmacists have a PC/internet access

  13. Barriers to CPD • “CPD isn’t relevant to me yet. I don’t know anyone who has been asked to submit so I’ll worry about it when it happens!” • Has anyone signed a declaration that you will undertake CPD and keep a record of it?

  15. CPD Top tips • Reflection-spend 30 minutes a month considering your learning needs and how to meet those learning needs • Form a study group • Use a strategy for meeting your learning needs. If internet search consider use of several high quality websites with good links to other sites

  16. CPD Top Tips • Be concise. Select your learning needs carefully. Are your objectives SMART • Overcome the barrier and complete that first entry. Make a start! • Unscheduled learning occurs regularly. Remember to record it. • Utilise the help available.

  17. CPD Example • Reflection. Having attended a most interesting and informative BPC session on CPD you decide to commence your CPD recording. You decide a starting point is learning how to actually complete an entry and consider any skills needs • Planning.
