Strategy: Draw A Picture 6 5 + 1 8 Text/Audio Narration: Now that I have shown you how to use the Draw A Picture strategy to add, I would like for you to practice with me. Let’s complete a few problems together. The new addition problem is sixty-five plus eighteen. What is the first thing we need to do? (Pause for students responses.) Yes, we need to draw the pictures for sixty-five and eighteen.

If we have more than nine ones, we need to circle ten of those ones to make a magic ten. Once you circle your ten ones, regroup the ones to make a ten.

Feedback: If your sum was 73, you forgot to draw a ten after you circled and regrouped your ten ones. If your sum was 93, you counted the circled group of ones with the other ones. Remember that you do not need to count the circled ones. The red ten now represents these ten ones.
