German Reichstag • Became Chancellor of Coalition Government under Weimar Republic 1933 • German Reichstag – Governing body under Weimar Republic • Reichstag had to agree to a bill before it became law • 1933 – 50% of Reichstag opposed the Nazi party • Many in Reichstag saw Hitler as a fall guy who would take blame if things went bad in Germany

Rise of Hitler • Hitler promised a general election in March 1933 – Tried to show opponents true loyalty to German people • 1933 – Nazi party weak – this election would have most likely killed Nazi party • Reichstag bldg burned down one week before the election – Hitler blames Communist uprising • Hitler gained “emergency powers” from President Hindenburg to prevent Communist takeover • Nazi officials arrest Mariannus Van Der Lubbe – A known communist near the fire

  4. Hitler solidifies power • Hitler used emergency powers to ban Communists and socialists • SA/Brown shirts – gangs of Hitler supporters – shut down Communist newspapers, waged violence in streets against Communists • Hitler promises free elections (several large groups banned from voting)

  5. The Fuhrer • 1934 – Became Fuhrer – Basically assumed all powers of German dictator • Issued laws forbidding other parties • Nazi secret police (SS/Storm Troopers) – Enforced Nazi police state

  6. 1935 • Violates Treaty of Versailles with Military Conscription Act • Nuremberg Laws – Deprived Jews of their citizenship, deprived marriage with Aryan Race

  7. 1936-1939 • German troops occupy Rhineland (on grounds that it had historically been a Germanic state) • Claims Lebensraum Speech – Germany needs more living space for its people • British PM Neville Chamberlain makes an appeasement of Hitler • 1938 – German troops occupy Sudetenland (On grounds the Czech people are largely Germanic speaking) • Hitler moves into Czechoslovakia 1939 • 1939 = Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact

  8. World War II • 1939 – Hitler launches “Blitzkrieg” on Poland • 1939 – Invades Finland • 1940 – Invades Denmark and Norway • 1940 – Stalin invades Baltic states • 1940 – German U-Boats roam North Sea • 1940 – Mussolini Invades Egypt, Greece • 1940 – Hitler invades Romania
