  2. After World War 1 • When Germany lost in World War 1, they were forced to sign The Treaty of Versailles. The country had to pay a lot of money to the winning countries. They were also not allowed to have an army.

  3. The Year 1922 • The German population swallowed the bitter pill of defeat as the victorious Allies punished Germany severely.

  4. The German Worker’s Party • The Nazi’s were originally called The German Worker’s Party. They were a right wing group and Adolf Hitler joined in 1919. He quickly became the leader because of his great speeches.

  5. Treaty of Versailles • Germany was disarmed and was forced to pay reparations to France and Britain for the huge costs of the war.

  6. Beer Hall Putsch • Hitler organized an overthrow of the local government in Munich in 1923. This was called the Beer Hall Putsch. It failed and he went to jail for high treason. However, he did such a good job of defending himself in court that he only had a sentence of five years and was released after one.

  7. The year 1925 - 1929 • The Nazi Party began building a mass movement. From 27,000 members in 1925, the party grew to 108,000 in 1929.

  8. Mein Kampf • Hitler wrote Mein Kampf (my struggle) while in jail. It was published in 1925 and was the basis for the Nazi’s beliefs.

  9. The Great Depression • It began in 1929 and wrought worldwide economic, social, and psychological consequences
