Dear Gordon and Madeline,

Some good friends of ours, Nina and Charles Marsden, will be in Seattle August 18 to September 1.

I usually hesitate to put strangers in touch with each other because it doesn’t seem to work out. But in this case, I have a feeling you would enjoy meeting them. They are both officers of the Midwest Appaloosa Conference and are interested in arranging reciprocal shows with groups from outside the Midwest.

I’ve mentioned that I’d be writing you, but added that you are busy and may not even be in town during the last part of August, so there is certainly no

to call them. If, however, you have time and think you’d like to meet them, they’ll be staying at the Horseshoe Inn on Murray Road.

Hopefully you can enjoy the meeting!

All our best,

At the same time I would also like to take that opportunity to briefly review Dynatek’s latest offering of products and services.

To set up a meeting for this at your convenience, I propose to call your office by the end of this week. It is my hope that we will be able to arrange to meet at your office before the end of the month.

I have just completed Dynatek’s management orientation program and am now keen to meet face-to-face with all of my key customers.

To Whom It May Concern,

It is my great pleasure to recommend Miss Lili Zhang to you, as she was one of my finest students in our department.

Miss Zhang began attending my English classes in the Department of International Trade University in 1992 and graduated in spring of 1996. Though it has been over eight years since I last saw her, the deep impression she made on me has not faded in the least. She is very intelligent, honest, creative, articulate, adaptive person. Her high academic achievement speaks for itself: she consistently scored in the top 5% in class.

I am certain that Miss Su would make great contributions to your company, and I strongly recommend her for the position. Please do not hesitate to inquire further if I can be of help to you.

Sincerely,

xxxxx

Run-on Sentence

A run-on sentence is two independent clauses that are run together without punctuation or a coordinating conjunction between them.

Three methods of correcting a run-on:

● A period and capital letter-Separate the independent clauses into

individual sentences with a period, or question mark or exclamation point,

if required.

● Semicolon-Separate the independent clauses with a semicolon if their

ideas are closely related.

● A comma and a joining word-Separate the independent clauses with a

comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, so, for, yet).

1. Mario told everyone in the room to be quiet his favorite show was on.

2. Mario told everyone in the room to be quiet, his favorite show was on.

We can correct the sentences this way:

(1) Mario told everyone in the room to be quiet. His favorite show was

on. (Capitalize the first letter of the last sentence.)

(2) Mario told everyone in the room to be quiet; his favorite show was

on. (Don’t capitalize the first letter of the last sentence.)
