  1. Satellite observations Christian Frankenberg, SRON, Utrecht Markus Woyde, IUP Heidelberg Ulrich Platt, IUP Heidelberg Cathy Clerbaux

  2. Outline • Status report of SCIAMACHY methane retrievals • Status report of IASI methane retrievals First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  3. SCIAMACHY retrievals Important milestone in collaboration with Thorsten Warneke, IUP Bremen: Update of spectroscopic parameteres in the NIR spectral range

  4. The unknowns • Pressure broadening coefficients • Pressure line shift • Line intensities The solution • Use lab measurements done by Thorsten Warneke, IUP Bremen(FTS, OPD:90cm, 280cm cell with methane and N2 as foreign gas) • Measurements done at 900,500,250,125,20,5,1 hPa (@25 and -30Degree) • Use multispectrum fit to retrieve spectral parameters (ie, global fit using all lab spectra in one constrained least squares fit) First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  5. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  6. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  7. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  8. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  9. Conclusions 1 • Broadening seems to be lower than in HITRAN, especially at high J’s in the Q-branch. • Seasonal bias seems to be resolved, currently under investigation First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  10. SCIAMACHY retrievals Latest results after implementation of new spectroscopy and substantial changes to previous versions.

  11. SCIA 2 year tropospheric average First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  12. SCIA 2 year tropospheric average First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  13. SCIA 2 year tropospheric average First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  14. Time period of the Science paper, total column xVMR First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  15. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  16. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  17. Summary, SCIAMACHY • Methane retrievals substantially improved • Tropical regions lower than before (not „too“ low) • Averaging kernels for every ground pixel available • Data format is HDF5, conversion tools could be provided • Once SCIA/6.03 version from ESA is available, reprocessing starts and will yield higher coverage for 2003-2004 • SCIA spectra quality degrades at the end of 2005, retrieval noise up by a factor of 2, will be analyzed in more detail • 2 papers to be written asap... First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  18. ULB/Service d’Aéronomie CH4 from thermal infrared instruments Ariane Razavi, Cathy Clerbaux Image by ESA

  19. IMG – FTIR Comparisons Interferometric Monitor for Greenhouses gases, data from 1-10 April 1997 The few collocated measurements are compared with ground based stations profiles smoothed by the IMG averaging kernels. First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  20. IASI Lauch and status Timeline • Oct. 19, 2006 MetOp-A launch  Nov. 29, 2006 First spectra • May 24, 2007 L1C Operational dissemination (Eumetcast) •  October, 2007 L2 trial and operational dissimination (T, H20) Level 1 1 106/day = 15 Gb Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  21. IASI - Spectral range • Extends from 645 to 2760 cm-1 • Resolution : 0.5 cm-1 • 2 regions where CH4 absorbs : around 1300 cm-1 near 2700 cm-1 Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007

  22. IASI – Influence of solar radiation • Day and night spectra differs at shortwave wavelengths (>2500 cm-1) due to solar radiation and scattering. • The additional inversion results, for some cases, in an improved sensitivity in the boundary layer. • And permits to reach 2 levels of vertical information (dofs). First HYMN annual meeting, Totnes, 21-23 Oct. 2007
