  1. Verbs A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being and is necessary to make a statement.

  2. Action Verbs • An action verb tells what someone or something does. • Some action verbs express physical action. Others express mental action. • Example – Physical Action Ted waved the signal flag. • Example – Mental Action He hoped for success.

  3. Transitive Verb • A transitive verbis followed by a direct object- that is, a word or words that answer the question what?or whom? • Example • The batter swung the bat confidently.

  4. Intransitive Verb • An intransitive verb is not followed by a direct object. • Example • The batter swungwildly. (Followed by an adverbthat answers how.)

  5. Linking Verbs • A linking verb links, or joins, the subject of a sentence (often a noun or pronoun) with a noun, a pronoun, or an adjective that identifies or describes the subject. A linking verb does not snow action. • Be in all its forms – am, is, are, was, were – is the most commonly used liking verb. • Example • The person behind the mask was you. • Archery is an outdoor sport.

  7. Verb Phrases • The verb in a sentence may consist of more than one word. The words that accompany the main verb are called auxiliary, or helping, verbs. • A verb phrase consists of a main verb and all its auxiliary, or helping, verbs.

  8. Auxiliary Verbs • Examples • We will weed the vegetable garden this morning. • Sandra has already weeded the peppers and the tomatoes. • I should be leaving.
