But, there are still some similarities between Al Farooq Umar Ibn Al KhattabMosque and Ampel Mosque.

Architecture of Ampel Mosque The Ampel mosque uses Javanese architecture rather than Arabic architecture even though it is in the Arabic Quarter. • Unlike other mosques in middle east and eastern Europe, Ampel mosque doesn’t have any dome. Instead, they have 3 level roof, which is traditional Javanese roof called Joglo. • The mosque have 16 wooden pillars inside with the calligraphy of AyatKursi on it. • The minaret is used to pray the Adzan. • The bedug is a large drum used to call for the prayer.

  24. SunanAmpel and his best friends are buried in the west side of the mosque. His tomb is also visited by pilgrims and on the east side is the tomb of MbahSoleh. • There are five gates that symbolize the essential elements of Islam. They are the Peneksen Gate, Madep Gate, Ngamal Gate, Poso Gate and Munggah Gate.

  26. RadenAchmadRachmatulloh, also called SunanAmpel was one of the Walisongo in Java. He was given land in the banks of Kalimas river where he built a mosque called Ampel mosque. He followed his aunt to Java in 1420. He came to Java to improve people’s moral. Then many people from around Indonesia and Arabs camed to Surbaya. But only the Arabs made their own village. SunanAmpel died in 1481 and was buried beside Ampel mosque. His tomb is also kept. The Arabs settled to Surabaya for business. They sell spices, clothing and souvenirs. Until now, Arabs still live in kampong Ampel and people from around the world visit Ampel mosque, Ampel market and shops around the street still sells souvenirs, clothing, spices and other artifacts.
