  4. Convection • The transfer of heat in a gas or liquid by movement of currents. Warm air rises and cool air sinks making a current. Ex: Heat leaves a coffee cup as the currents of steam and air rise. The warmed matter (air) is being transferred.

  5. Convection currents move heated air around the Earth. Ex: Pasta rising and falling in a pot of boiling water

  6. Have you ever touched something hot? How does that happen?

  7. Conduction • The transfer of heat through matter from particle to particle. Ex: A spoon in a bowl of hot soup becomes warmer because the heat is conducted along the spoon.

  8. Conduction is most effective in solids but also happens in liquids.

  9. Radiation • Transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves moving through space. Ex: Sunlight is a form of radiation. The Sun transfers heat through 93 million miles of space.

  10. Radiation is the way air is heated. • Convection currents move the heated air around the Earth.
