  2. Definition of Service Learning • The actual definition of Service Learning is: a method of teaching, learning, and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community.

  3. What Service Learning Means to us…. • Service learning in my opinion is doing a type of service in our community while learning responsibilities and values at the same time. • Service learning is about helping other people in our community for the good of helping others as well as ourselves.

  4. Fall Semester 2007 Service Learning • In the fall of 2007 I helped out with Habitat for humanity. We helped to build a house for a family that was in need. • I did the 5K Honey Bee Festival bike ride. • We both helped out at the Doug Henderson Memorial Golf Tournament which was helping to raise money for cancer research.

  5. Service Learning 2008 Relay for Life is the only service learning project we worked on this semester. However it was a great experience and something I would love to continue doing for years to come. Seeing how many lives are affected by Relay for Life is an image that will never be erased and having the ability to help out was well worth it.

  6. Experiences of Relay for Life • At Relay for Life, Brandy and I had a blast. We walked around to all the booths and bought hot dogs and candy from several of the stations set up. • We also rode the mechanical bull and went down the obstacle course.

  7. Walking the Track We were there for the luminaries and watched as the actual survivors walked the first lap. Both Brandy and I had classes last semester with Dr. Bartholomew who had cancer and left last semester to have a surgery to remove the cancer. We also have Schmier together this semester and he actually was walking at Relay because of his cancer survival experience.

  8. Team Service Learning Experience • Our service learning team raised a little over $4,000 and the only other person that had more than that was a faculty and staff team that only had about $25 more than we did. • Also there were competitions for the best decorated tent and our tent won first place!!! • We also had the most amount of people on our team out of every other team at the Relay for Life.

  9. Personal Reflection • Seeing all of the lives that were affected by our service learning really helped to shape our perspectives on what some people go through in life. • We were glad to be able to contribute to helping other people in surviving a disease that at this point has no actual cure. • A lot of people do not realize how many people are affected by cancer and going to this Relay for Life you see how many people in such a small community have been affected by it before.

  10. Thoughts about Relay for Life • We did have a lot of fun this year with Relay for Life and learned so much by being there and experiencing it. • We do hope though that next year there would be more for us to do at our tent. We had such a large group that most of us were not able to help out at our tent.
