Service Learning Service-Learning – FYE students participate inservice-learning projects which integrate community service with academic instruction that focuses on critical thinking, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service-learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community. Community service projects have included Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, the animal shelter, Relay for Life and many more. Service opportunities are organized based on students’ interests.
Benefits of Service Learning Include… Provides quality education; Increases the relevancy of education to students "living in a real world; Teaches positive values, leadership, citizenship and personal responsibility; Empowers students as learners, teachers, achievers and leaders; Invites students to become members of theirnew community; Teaches job skills and prepares students for careers after college; Contributes to a university's outreach effortsto the local community, the state and beyond; Increases campus-community collaboration and partnerships and Increases retention
Doing My Part… During the whole corse of the 2009-2010 school year I completed a lot of service learning… I participated in a car wash. I also made boxes filled with gifts for less needy children.
Doing My Part Cont… During the year I aslo gave blood more than once, to help the community and get hours. I also participated in visitation day, which meant walking around and showing potential students the campus.
What I learned in service learning… I learned a lot of things in service learning, one has been a lot of respect for my community. Having to wake up early in the morning and go participate in service learning has taught me responsibility and a greater respect for the people who participate all the time.
Fun times… I would have to say I have had a lot of fun time in FYE and doing service learning. Even though there were sometimes where I didn’t want to participate I did it anyway because most of my peers were participating.
Looking back… Though there are sometimes that I want to forget, Mrs. Tillman's FYE class is one I want to remember for a life time. I would like to thank her for the wonderful teachers she has set us up with over this whole year, and the guidance she has given us.
