  1. China Weather System Can Mother Nature be Changed?

  2. Is Controlling the Weather Really Possible? • In reality….No, it is not possible to control the weather. • Can the weather be altered? Absolutely, and that is what China has been researching. • A common practice for over 50 years

  3. Incentive to Change the Natural Pattern of Rain? • China is heavily populated with very bad smog and pollution. • Help clear smog and pollution • Help provide more crops and water to the cities. • Olympics 2008 • http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/09/content_9079637.htm

  4. Rain • Works when too much moisture is collected in clouds to a point of saturation, when the clouds can no longer support the moisture. • When the clouds can no longer support the moisture, rain droplets are formed and begin to fall.

  5. So How Do the Chinese Alter This Natural Process? • Cloud seeding • What? • Nuclei • How? • Guns • Planes • Why? • Expedite

  6. Different Nuclei Used in Cloud Seeding are: • Salts, calcium, chloride, dry ice or silver iodide. • Chinese use silver iodide because it is similar to ice crystals

  7. How Effective is Cloud Seeding? • Beijing’s water basins have increased over 13 percent • Cloud seeding often helps to cool temperatures

  8. Different Forms of Cloud Seeding • Static • Silver Iodide • Dynamic • Boosts vertical air currents = more water • Hygroscopic • Disperses salts to enlarge rain drops

  9. Different Forms of Cloud Seeding (cont’d) • 12,000 anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers • 30 planes • 32,000-35,000 people participate

  10. Is This Process Cost Effective? • China spends 60-90 millions dollars a year • Pay farmers $100 / month to fire anti-aircraft guns

  11. Could Anger Neighbors • While some of the cities need rainfall, others do not. • http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3893671.stm

  12. Could Anger Neighbors (cont’d) • Accused of stealing rain? • That’s right, some cities say others using cloud seeding stole their potential clouds • China man angry:

  13. Major Chinese Cities Rainfall Report Haikou knew they were to experience droughts over winter and over extended cloud seeding

  14. Resources • Beijing 2008 Olympics • http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/09/content_9079637.htm • Can China Control the Weather? • http://science.howstuffworks.com/cloud-seeding.htm • China rain-making creates a storm • http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3893671.stm • Rainfall Report • http://www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/gdrf/gd_actb.shtml
