Rising Action • Hugo steals mouse/old man steals notebook • Hugo tries to get notebook back • Hugo visits Isabelle to try to get notebook back • Flashback • Hugo and his dad were working on the automaton • Hugo’s dad dies in the museum fire (accident) and Hugo goes to live with Uncle Claude in the train station • Uncle Claude disappears and Hugo begins to repair the automaton • Hugo collects his Uncle’s paychecks, but does not cash them; he also takes care of the clocks.
