  1. Macintosh vs. WindowsThe age old question: What operating system is the best?! Presentation by: Sean Romero Computer Science

  2. Introduction For years, Macintosh and Windows have been battling against each other to see which operating system is the best in the world. While Windows has been around since the early 90’s, Macintosh’s Snow Leopard OS is swiftly developing and becoming quite the opponent to battle against Microsoft’s brand new Windows 7 OS. In this presentation, I will be presenting both the pros and cons of using a Snow Leopard OS and a Windows 7 OS, and I’ll be weighing in with my opinion on what operating system I would recommend for you guys to use. Snow Leopard, or Windows 7?!

  3. Benefits of Snow Leopard: Battery Life • Even though Battery Life is determined by the laptop you use, buying a Macbook, Macbook Air or Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard has the best battery of any laptop to date. • Battery Life on a Macintosh computer can exceed up to about 10 hours of battery life on a full charge. • Because the Macbook uses only one battery compared to three on a standard laptop (HP, Alienware, Dell, etc), the battery can last up to a total of five years.

  4. Benefits of Snow Leopard: Slim to none Viruses! • When running the Snow Leopard OS, most likely you will not run into any viruses, malware, infections, RATs, or anything harmful that can slow down your computer. • Most viruses, infections and malware come from .exe files that people download from malicious websites, or even their own email. • Since Mac OS uses the file extension .dmg, and there are no reported viruses or infections that deal with .dmg files, you won’t be needing to reformat your computer every few months.

  5. Cons of Snow Leopard: You can’t run all your programs on it • Since Mac uses the file extension .dmg instead of Windows’ .exe file extension, you can’t run most of your favorite programs on a Mac. • Programs such as AIM, Pidgin.IM, VLC Media Player and Windows Messenger all have their own versions that are compatible with Mac, which can also be a disadvantage as Windows versions of those programs are more frequently updated than the Mac versions. • In order to run Windows programs on a Mac, you need to purchase “Boot Camp” separately, and you need to purchase a copy of Windows 7 as well, thus wasting money.

  6. Cons of Snow Leopard: It isn’t used in every type of business • Snow Leopard OS is not used in most business offices anywhere, as the programs that companies use have been built on Windows, and have been since the start. • Snow Leopard and Mac are solely used in areas of graphic design, music, fashion or anything art-related. • Creating a program for a business in Mac form means the cost of computers for a company would rise. The prices for Mac computers and laptops are higher compared to Windows PCs and laptops.

  7. Benefits of Windows 7: Endless Customization Possibilities • With Windows 7, you can customize the way your desktop and interface looks. • With artists in communities such as deviantART, you can download and install Windows 7 themes in an ease. • There is no end to the possibilities that you can do when customizing your desktop and interface on Windows 7. If you want to place a built in Winamp player on your desktop, a Mac dock on the bottom, the weather ticker, calendar, etc, it can all be done on Windows 7!

  8. Benefits of Windows 7: Entertainment • Unlike Macs, Windows 7 is compatible with all games and are ready to play whenever you are. • With Games for Windows, you can play your favorite titles such as Shadowrun, Halo 2 Vista, Grand Theft Auto IV, etc. straight on your PC. • You can connect your Xbox 360 to your PC or laptop to share, download and stream videos. • With Steam, you can purchase any PC game released, and download it to your PC. • Unlike a Mac, Windows 7 laptops and computers support the brand new Blu-Ray technology to enhance your movie watching experience.

  9. Benefits of Windows 7: Wide Selection • In order to use the Snow Leopard OS, you need to purchase an Apple based product only, such as the Macbook Pro, Macbook Air or Mac Pro. • Several companies such as Dell, HP, Asus, Gateway, and Intel all have customizeable PCs and laptops that already come with Windows 7. • If you don’t want to purchase a Dell PC or laptop, you can always purchase one with Intel or HP, and Windows 7 will still be there waiting for you.

  10. Cons of Windows 7: Viruses! • Most viruses come from malicious .exe files that are downloaded from crack/serial websites, weird emails, etc. • Several viruses such as Trojan Horses, worms, etc are the reasons why some PCs crash and need to be reformatted. • Malware and infections on a PC can come from the smallest of things, from opening up .exe files that look safe, but are infected, to just cookies from your browser.

  11. Cons of Windows 7: Having to frequently Reformat • With your PC being infected by visiting websites, opening up malicious email and opening up malicious .exe files, sometimes AntiViruses can’t help you out. • When AVG, Norton or Avira can’t help you out, you need to re-install Windows all over again. Installing Windows can take up to an hour and a half depending on how much space you have used on your computer, and if you want to back up your files or not. • If you’re a casual computer user, expect to run into maleware, bad cookies and inefections quite often, so stay on your toes.

  12. Apple’s “Mac vs PC” Ad Campaign Videos • Here is Apple’s “Apple vs Mac” campaign, featuring actor Justin Long portraying the “Mac”.

  13. PC.com’s “PC over Mac” Ad • PC.com explains the benefits of having a Windows-powered PC compared to having a Macintosh.
