Pick 3 colors (any 3 that you want) and mark the text as we read. 1st color: Academic language 2nd color: Informal language 3rd color: Words and phrases that help you establish cultural identity We will do the first 2 paragraphs together.

  3. What is the Academic Voice? With your group, identify the following elements in the text. Be ready to discuss! Table 1: Inclusive pronouns Table 2: Active Verbs Table 3: In-text citations Table 4: Illustrative examples Table 5: Diverse punctuation Table 6: Rhetorical questions

  4. After Reading: Questions • What is your understanding of cultural identity based on this text? • Reflect on invisible aspects of your culture. What differences exist between you and your culture? • What are some examples of your culture? Explain how these aspects are dynamic.

  5. Personal Essay: Ethnic Hash Identify stylistic differences that establish voice! Pick 3 colors (any 3 that you want) and mark the text as we read. 1st color: Academic language 2nd color: Informal language 3rd color: Words and phrases that help you establish cultural identity We will do the first 2 paragraphs together.

  6. What is the Informal Voice? With your group, identify the following elements in the text. Be ready to discuss! Table 1: First person point of view Table 2: Fragments for effect Table 3: Proper nouns Table 4: Vivid details and descriptions Table 5: Punctuation to create humor Table 6: Shifts in tone

  7. After Reading: Questions • Complete all the questions 8-11 on p.13 • Discuss!

  8. Homework… • Log in to Reading Plus and complete the RPA (placement test). You have all week to do this. Log in through your student portal. • Vocabulary worksheet: Complete the vocabulary worksheet handed out in class. • Complete the Writing Prompt at the bottom of p. 13. Do this in the SpringBoard section of your notebook!
